I’m a born-and-raised island girl, and I like to shop local whenever I can. Hawaii Domestic Market sells creative clothing and accessories that capture the island spirit. Misting sunscreen protects makeup, too

Sunscreen is no longer a one-size-fits-all deal. I’ve got a pricier one that I use in the morning before work (Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer) that soaks in well before I apply makeup, and a cheap but effective formula (Honest Mineral Sunscreen) that I use for the beach and baseball games. And now I have one that transitions with my ever- changing plans.

Island Sole, which has made an art of slipper making, is now making slippers into art. Pencil stubs help your garden grow

If you’ve got a kindergartner in the house like I do, you’ve probably got a good collection of pencils for homework. I love Sprout pencils because when they get too stubby to use, you can stick them in the garden and a plant will grow. The plantable pencils, dreamed up by three Massachusetts Institute of Technology students, are made from Forest Stewardship Council-certified cedar wood, clay and graphite, and contain a seed capsule on the end. My son calls them “magic pencils.”

Handy drink mixes add flavor to plain old water

I know I need to drink more water, but it’s always hard for me to guzzle something without any flavor. For years I stuck with sports drinks and other powdered mixes filled with extra sugar and artificial ingredients as my go-to when I got thirsty.
