City officials are repairing a large sinkhole that developed in the street Tuesday afternoon at the Ewa entrance to Ala Moana Park Drive, but they do not know when the work will wrap up.

This morning, an assessment by workers with the Department of Design and Construction and Department of Facility Maintenance found that pieces from two of the pipes beneath the roadway were dislodged at separate junctions, the city said in a release. Sediment from under the roadway drained over time, causing the pipes to fail, the release said.

Three pipes at the location, which connect the park lagoon with Kewalo Basin, have to be reexamined which requires further excavation of the roadway and possibly the sidewalk, the city said.

The sinkhole itself is at least four feet in diameter, city officials estimated.

The Department of Parks and Recreation is working with police and the Department of Transportation Services to mitigate traffic caused by the entrance closure. Until the repairs are completed, vehicular entrance will only be through the Diamond head entrance, across Atkinson Drive.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are allowed through the Ewa entrance, which is across Kamakee Street, as well as other regular entry points.

Park hours remain 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
