Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., speaks during the first day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia tonight.

PHILADELPHIA >> Ending months of animosity, Bernie Sanders robustly embraced his former rival Hillary Clinton tonight as a champion for the same economic causes that enlivened his supporters, signaling it was time for them, too, to rally behind the Democratic nominee in the campaign against Republican Donald Trump.

“Any objective observer will conclude that — based on her ideas and her leadership — Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States,” he declared in a headlining address on the opening night of the Democratic convention.

President Bill Clinton, watching from the audience, leapt to his feet and applauded, as did most of the delegates filling the convention arena.

Sanders joined a high-wattage line-up of speakers, including first lady Michelle Obama who delivered a forceful, impassioned defense of the Democratic nominee. Mrs. Obama’s address all but wiped away earlier tumult in the convention hall that had exposed lingering tensions between Clinton and Sanders supporters.

“I want someone with the proven strength to persevere, someone who knows this job and takes it seriously, someone who understands the issues a president faces are not black and white,” Mrs. Obama said. Referring to Trump’s penchant for tweeting, she said of the presidency: “It cannot be boiled down to 140 characters.”

While Sanders had endorsed Clinton previously, his remarks Monday marked his most vigorous and detailed praise of her qualifications for the presidency. It came at a crucial moment for Clinton’s campaign, on the heels of leaked emails suggesting the party had favored the former secretary of state through the primaries despite a vow of neutrality.

Sanders scored the resignation of party chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a nemesis in the primaries, but that wasn’t enough to quell the anger of supporters. As the convention opened, they still erupted in chants of “Bernie” and booed Clinton the first several times her name was mentioned. Outside the convention hall, several hundred marched down Philadelphia’s sweltering streets with signs carrying messages such as “Never Hillary.”

By the time Sanders took the stage for the night’s closing address, much of the anger had been overshadowed by speeches promoting party unity. Sanders did his part, imploring his supporters to consider a country under Trump’s leadership.

“If you don’t believe this election is important, if you think you can sit it out, take a moment to think about the Supreme Court justices that Donald Trump would nominate and what that would mean to civil liberties, equal rights and the future of our country,” he said.

Sanders spoke just after Massachusetts. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a favorite of liberals who has emerged as one of the Democrats’ toughest critics of Trump.

“Donald Trump has no real plans for jobs, for college kids, for seniors,” she said in the keynote address. “No plans to make anything great for anyone except rich guys like Donald Trump.”

Mrs. Obama was one of the night’s standouts. While she has often avoided overt politics during her nearly eight years in the White House, her frustration with Trump’s rise was evident. She warned that the White House couldn’t be in the hands of someone with “a thin skin or a tendency to lash out” or someone who tells voters the country can be great again.

“This right now, is the greatest country on earth,” she said.

Clinton’s campaign hoped the nighttime line-up would overshadow a tumultuous start to the four-day convention. The hacked DNC emails fed the suspicion of Sanders’ supporters and sapped Clinton’s campaign of some of its energy following a well-received rollout Saturday of her running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine.

Campaigning in North Carolina, Trump seemed to revel in the Democrats’ commotion, telling supporters that Clinton made a mistake by not choosing a more liberal running mate to appease Sanders’ base. “Crazy Bernie’s going crazy right now,” he said.

But in Philadelphia, Delegates waved “Love Trumps Hate” signs and cheered as immigration supporters, gay rights advocates, and labor leaders took the stage.

Comedian-turned-Sen. Al Franken, a Clinton supporter, and actress Sarah Silverman, a Sanders supporter, made a joint appearance to promote party unity.

“I am proud to be part of Bernie’s movement,” Silverman said as the crowd roared. “And a vital part of that movement is making absolutely sure Hillary Clinton is our next president of the United States.”

Trump was a frequent target throughout the night, though the jabs were often more mocking than mean. The tone was a sharp contrast to the Republican convention, where the attacks against Clinton was bitingly personal, including chants of “Lock her up.”

Wasserman Schultz had planned to be among those taking the stage, despite the email hacking controversy. But she stepped aside, bowing to pressure from Democrats who feared the mere sight of her on stage would prompt strong opposition.

The outgoing chairwoman did watch the gathering from a private suite at the arena.

Discussions between the Clinton and Sanders camps prompted him to send emails and text messages to supporters asking them not to protest.

“Our credibility as a movement will be damaged by booing, turning of backs, walking out or other similar displays,” Sanders wrote.

    • I know you frequently miss things, so I’ll surprise you with the fact that this speech was given at the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) convention. The DNC is a political organization.

You learn something new from me every day!

        • You said what klastri knows and I’m saying everything you KNOW. See hard to remember already.

        • You write all day and night, every day and night, about what you know. Ad nauseam. And then some more.

          Not impressive.

        • First, the White House was not built solely — or even primarily — by slaves.

Most of the labor force consisted of local White laborers and artisans (from Maryland and Virginia) and a number of immigrants from Ireland, Scotland, and other European nations.

As the project neared completion — the lime-based whitewashing that gives the building its iconic appearance…slaves were indeed added to the mix.
          And they were paid.

        • There’s going to be a big investigation about crediting the slaves for building the White House.

        • lespark – There has already been a “big investigation” about the role of slaves building the White House. It’s called the White House Historical Association.

Do you ever do any brief research on any topic before writing about it?

        • The people who really know have been dead for a very long time. The more you comment the more strange you seem to be. You cannot be from the monkey family because they’re really intelligent. I want to see if I’m moderated for this comment. After all you made a comment that said that Donna and Lynette had same mother but we’re fathered by different gorillas.

        • I did, where do you think I got the data from? Like I said, what you think you know I forgot.

        • Omg you must have a very old dictionary. Maybe from the days when the White House was being built by slaves. They were short of ink. Bet you still write with a chicken feather.

        • Klas, everyday you say this and you say that. Some days you have a point, other days you don’t know what you are talking about. Most days, every days I prove you wrong. What you think you know I forgot.
Keaukaha is another matter. He’s never got one right yet. Swoosh.

        • You lied about slaves getting paid when they built the White House.

Why would you make up something so ridiculous, that is so easily disproven? You do this all day long.

        • THE DEMOCRATS ARE IN PHILADELPHIA, MARXISM IS ON THE RISE IN AMERICA AND ISIS ARE THE WOLVES AT THE DOOR.

‪#‎Marxism‬ is the root cause of much of what ‪#‎America‬ is experiencing right now. Based on the writings of Karl Marx in the ‪#‎Communist‬ Manifesto and Saul Alinsky in Rules for Radicals, what we are seeing in the streets of our US cities is fundamental to establishing a Marxist society.

        • sarge22 – Wolves at the door?

Do you ever get exhausted by your disgraceful cowardice? All the Republicans have is fear.

No ideas … just be afraid.

        • Killing ‪#‎police‬ and attacking soft targets where mass ‪#‎murder‬ results is all part of the plan to create civil unrest, rioting and anarchy, which then leads to government control. Once the government has control and all liberties are suspended, the leadership then determines what the population will be allowed to have and what they are allowed to do.

        • sarge22 – Only if cowards (like you, for instance) give the demagogues, like Trump, that power.

You can be as afraid as you want to be. And you certainly that whole conspiracy thing figured out!

Make sure your aluminum foil has isn’t on too tight.

        • In their bizarre showcase of illegal aliens on the first day of their convention, Democrats not only shamelessly used a little girl for crass political reasons, they also managed to break federal immigration law – twice.

Karla Ortiz has appeared on television and in commercials telling Hillary Clinton how scared she is that her illegal immigrant mom will be deported. In the ad – and again Monday night – we hear that Hillary told her that she would do the worrying for Karla. Aww.

        • In a video, Karla tells Clinton that her mother received a deportation order – which the Democratic National Committee is clearly ignoring.

After the mother-daughter act, another illegal alien took to the stage. Astrid Silva said: “I came to America illegally with my mother when I was four years old. We crossed the river on a raft.”

        • The kid can stay, the parents have got to come in legally. Don’t blame Trump. If you got to blame somebody blame Obama and Congress for the mess.

    • She claims the White House was built by slaves. Read this.
First, the White House was not built solely — or even primarily — by slaves.

And, they were paid for their work.

      • The slaves, of course, were not paid. Their masters were paid for the slaves used in the project.

Lying does not help build your case.

You should read reports issued by the White House Historical Association.

Maybe you just forgot the truth?

        • That’s because the U.S. government actually paid the slaves who worked on the White House.

One slave — Philip Reid — was paid directly, a sum of $1.25 per day ($31 per day in 2016 dollars). Is it technically “slave labor” — if you are paid?
Like I said, what you think you know I forgot. Don’t flatter yourself.
          Just remember The Benghazi Massacre.

      • At the peak of black slavery in the South, only 6 percent of Southern whites owned slaves. If you include the white people in the North, it means that only 1.4 percent of white Americans owned black slaves at the HEIGHT of slavery.
An estimated 3,000 blacks owned a total of 20,000 black slaves in the year 1860.
Who knows blacks may have owned the slaves.

        • scud runner, thank you, the Democrats sure have a lot of black politicians like Sharpton, Jackson, Cummings and others living off the black constituents. Yet they continue to live in poverty, crime, housing projects, just where their politicians want them. Easier to control. That’s been the Clintons and Obama’s road to the WH all these years.
          This year I’m voting Majority.

        • Well, that makes it all better then!

What, exactly, is wrong with you? Have you no shame?

        • Al Sharpton owes a staggering 4.5 mill to the IRS, not to worry thou Obama will pardon Al, it’s only taxpayers money.

        • scuddrunner – A day without you bringing up Al Sharpton – no matter what article you’re commenting on – would be like a day without sunshine.

You need to come up with a new list of black people to criticize. Maybe lespark and sarge22 can help you out there.

        • “Sharpton, Jackson, Cummings and others living off the black constituents. Yet they continue to live in poverty, crime, housing projects, just where their politicians want them. Easier to control. That’s been the Clintons and Obama’s road to the WH all these years.” That sounds about right. On the other hand we have Dr Ben Carson, Sheriff David Clarke, Herman Caine and Michael Jordan.

        • sarge22 – Well, you found four blacks folks that are acceptable to you! Good for you!

Most overt racists probably can’t name more than two or three. So there you go!

        • scuddruner, sarge22, lespark..you Patriots need to go easy with the FACTS against the oppressed opposition…them trying to “Defend the Indefensible” only making them look sillier by the minute! lol

      • She said the WH was built but slaves. She conveniently forgot to mention that other people, notably white, taught them and they worked side by side.
        Enough.
What differences at this point does it matter. Nobody got tortured, their bodies mutilated, dragged through the streets and sent back to their families, what was left of them in body bags.

    • Sour grapes. Mrs. Obama totally outclassed and out-intelligenced the GOP offering of First Lady. Think about this: One day, Melania Trump might be the ONLY person Donald Trump might have to bounce a monumental decision on National Security off of.

      • You hit the nail on the head. Chump is getting pummeled and supporters are getting more desperate. What ridiculous comments, totally insane just like the Chump.

Aww.

    • As a native American, I am so proud of Michelle Obama. What a gem of a person and a model of probity and intellect. She is a model for all of us. Poor old trump: he is so appallingly ignorant and unhinged.

  • “By persuading you that the real problem in America is your fellow Americans”

Illegal immigrants that murder innocent young women?

Islamic extremists that kill their coworkers at a party?

  • In a couple of days the 2nd round of damaging emails from Russia will hit the internet and that will be the end of Hillary.
    Hi-ho hi-ho it’s off to jail we go. 🙂

      • No matter how many times (over and over and over and over again) you write HiLIARy, it’s fresh and funny every time!

And so original too! None of the other folks in the right wing echo chamber write that. Oh … wait ….

        • I wrote klasless many times also. Hope it’s fresh and funny every time. HiLIARy automatically comes up whenever I touch my keyboard. My keyboard is my crystal ball.

        • sarge22 – Yes, of course. It stings every time I read your whining about me.

          Kidding!

        • Not to mention that he’ll eventually get carpel tunnel for going the extra mile for highlighting.

        • sarge22 since you mentioned voter ID…Dems want to abolish that reqt…BUT WHY does anyone need an ID to get into their convention?

        • Keonigohan, I went to the Federal Building to speak to members of our Congressional delegation about their opposition to photo IDs to vote. When I got to the security check point, I produced an electric bill and water bill to prove my identity and got thrown out on my butt because I did not have a photo ID. Just kidding, of course, but that is exactly what will happen if you try to enter the Federal Building without a photo ID.

        • Yeah but he’s the president and can do whatever he wants. It’s not his fault that the republican majority congress has shut him down for eight years. He has been a h-ll of a president and his legacy will live on with Madam president Clinton.

        • “He’s the president and can do whatever he wants” That’s what he thought. Fooled him. Legacy of total failure and soon to be gone. Alohs

        • This is what you think about and write about? Golf?

This is how your brain works?

        • O golfs half the time..a quarter of the time partys with the hiphop & his fellow racist crowd…the other quarter he vacations.

  • “Interesting that she’s lived there for what, eight years now? And it hasn’t really seemed to bother her much. Then again, how ironic a comment coming from someone who has earned the nickname ‘Mooch’ as we, the American people, are now the slaves paying for her rent, utilities, and lavish quarter-of-a-million-dollar vacations,” wrote Melissa Dykes on The Daily Sheeple.

  • Al Franken had a wonderful message for delegates when he urged them to work hard after the convention to get Hillary elected by getting out and knocking on doors to get out the vote. He even encouraged delegates with eight-year old children to leave them at home alone while out campaigning for Hillary. He said they were old enough to know how to operate a microwave, suggesting that they could heat their own meals, and were even smart enough to teach their four-year old siblings how to do it, suggesting that an eight-year old was old enough to baby sit a four-year old. That to me is child abuse and it came from a Democrat US Senator.

  • Senator Cory Booker as Mayor
Appeared at town-hall meetings throughout Newark’s five wards. By his side always was Linda Watkins Brashear, the former executive director who has pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud and admitted in federal court that she took close to $1 million in kickbacks and bribes.

    • No wonder he didn’t get the nod for VPOTUS. Any politician in New Jersey, well, you know what I mean. I think Kaine was the only guy they could have find could pass a lie detector test, go to a black church and speak Spanish.

      • The only guy who could go to a black church?

Why do you write relentlessly racist things on here all day, every day?

What could it be …… let me think …..

        • It’s not unusual, on an election-year Sunday, to find a white candidate in a black church. But Tim Kaine, swaying this month to the gospel groove at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in a poor Richmond neighborhood, wasn’t on the campaign trail. He was taking a break from it at his home parish.
Just like crooked HiLIARy pandering for votes.

  • Pocahontas Realty – specializing in foreclosures.
“Just a headline, though, from National Review, May 27, 2015,” he said. “Because I heard this and we all heard this, and so, headline: ‘Elizabeth Warren Bought Foreclosed Homes to Make a Quick Profit.’ May 27, 2015, ‘before the crash that she blamed on speculators, Sen. Elizabeth Warren made a bundle by flipping houses.’”
What do you expect from Democrats. They are no different.

  • Majority of the comments here are far from anything spectacular! All the writers’ posts are written well but the discussion fluctuates from one subject to another and most losing the thread of the headlines of this storyline! It’s puzzling and disturbing! Where’s the beef kids?

    • The kids are voting so it’s Jungle Rules. SA story line is always anti GOP so you have to make a stand. It’s definitely not the normal Presidential race.

  • I have no doubt Hillary will crash and Burn! The emails wikileaks leaked will only seal the deal.Heck some of the democrat delegates are looking the other Way! ….Abandon ship! Haaaaaaa! Yes Bernie fell on the sword to save Sweet Hillary and his supporters are livid! Why did he abandon his supporters. And what was all the fuss about? Hillary was this and that.taking money from wall street and all….and now he says Hillary will make an excellent president? are you crazy? Or just tired? I just hope people wake up! Because the last thing I want is another term of Obama. But what scares me even more is turning ole Billy Bob loose on the fresh interns in the White House . Man he must be licking his chops right about now . A vote for Hillary? You gotta be out of your gourd! Take heart and remember to just do your ABC,s……Any Body but the Clintons.????

    • Clinton Cash: “Devastating” Documentary Reveals How Clintons Went From “Dead Broke” To Mega Wealthy

Clinton Cash, a feature documentary based on the Peter Schweizer book, has been posted to YouTube for all to view free just in time for the DNC. Clinton Cash investigates how Bill and Hillary Clinton went from being “dead broke” after leaving the White House to amassing a net worth of over $150 million, with over $2 billion in donations to their foundation. This wealth was accumulated during Mrs. Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State through lucrative speaking fees and contracts paid for by foreign companies and Clinton Foundation donors.
The New York Times hailed the book as “The most anticipated and feared book of a presidential cycle” while MSNBC described the documentary as devastating for the Hillary campaign.

The Clinton camp has, of course, dismissed the documentary as a right-wing smear campaign filled with unsubstantiated conspiracy theories. That said, perhaps the most shocking aspect of the release is that many of the biggest bombshells revealed in the documentary have been vetted and confirmed by various mainstream media outlets. More recently, some information uncovered in the Panama Papers has echoed some of Schweitzer’s allegations in the movie and book.http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-07-25/clinton-cash-debut-just-time-fan-flames-tension-dnc

  • Why do Black Americans always bring up something that happened 200 years ago. Give it a rest. There’s no more slaves in the US. Only those who are “slaved” to the “slave” issue of long ago. Move on and get a life.

    • Because black people still alive today were not able to vote, eat at some restaurants, stay at some hotels, marry white people, etc. And a lot of them get shot, while unarmed, by police.

      That’s why.

        • This, again, shows your breathtaking & disgraceful ignorance.

Loving v. Virginia was a 1967 case. The Voting Rights Act was a 1965 law. Jim Crow laws started being enacted in the 1880s and remained in force, being enforced, until the 1960s.

Overtly racist laws lived for a long time, and largely created people like you.

  • Rah Rah speech by the First Lady that was divisive as her other speeches. Not particularly inspiring, or moving, but she did say what she said with emotion. All in all, predictable, and rather well presented.

    • I am not an Obama fan however saw Michele’s DNC recorded speech online and it was perfect to help convince the die hard Bernie fans to support Hillary and solidify the Black vote for Hillary. Julie Roginsky of Foxnews was right Kaine was chosen to attract the male Caucasian voters because they don’t need the VP to attract the Black or Hispanic vote since Michele and Eva Longoria for the Hispanic vote have taken care of those voting blocks at the DNC in Philadelphia. Where Melania has to copy Michele’s word because she has no original thought of her own, Michele appears to speak from her own heart and discuss her life experiences to get out the message of how Hillary needs to be the next Pres of the US. Michele never once directly mention Trump’s name, that was masterful just like in the Harry Potter movies where no utters evil Voldemort’s name and instead calls him “you-know-who”.

      • “I am not an Obama fan” Too funny. That’s as true a statement as stating that Mooch speaks from her heart. A VP who speaks Spanish. So did Jeb Bush and where is he now? She didn’t mention ISIS or Radical Islamic Terrorism either. So would you like to start over.

  • Even in the midst of the e-mail pilikia, Dems managed a convincing unity rally. The FL delegates booed that has-been, what’s her name again, DWS right off her own stage. The trio of heavy hitters capped off the first night with three rousing speakers that each brought waves of cheers and tumult. Dem party unity is looking good going into the general election, and with things back on track we’re gonna steamroll that yelping kabocha the GOTP was foolish enough to nominate.

  • We are not great right now. This country treats illegals better than our own people. Veterans are treated like second class citizens. We have lost the respect from other countries and aren’t you tired of hearing “our hearts and minds are on the victims, families and friends” plus how the people involved will be brought to justice? Auwe!

    • I saw an excerpt on the news this AM of the “skank” comedienne Sarah Silverman angrily lecturing Sanders supporters from the podium. I also saw a news clip of illegal aliens spewing hate for US law. Of course no mention that every attorney, and there were hundreds there, should be disbarred as officers of the court for failing to take action because of knowledge of a crime.
