Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz and Torrey Meister won their respective Round 4 heats on Friday to advance to today’s Round 5 of the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Zietz won his heat with a 11.97, eliminating Nathan Yeomans (USA, 11.33) and Hawaii’s Kiron Jabour (10.07). Meister scored 13.67 to eliminate Kanoa Igarashi (USA, 12.50) and Griffin Colapinto (USA, 9.34).
Also eliminated in the World Surf League Men’s Qualifying Series was Hawaii’s Keanu Asing (10.47) who was third in his heat against Australians Mitch Crews (13.73) and Mitch Colebom (11.80).
Today’s lineup has Zietz against Davey Catheis of Australia and Meister against Brazilian Bino Lopes.
The women’s quarterfinals in the WSL Championship Tour stop have been moved to Sunday. Tatiana Weston-Webb and Malia Manuel are the two Hawaii surfers remaining.
Electricians, Chosen meet for summer title
Top-seeded defending champion Electricians Hawaii faces second-seeded Chosen Few for the Hawaii College Basketball League championship tonight at Maryknoll.
The teams split their summer regular-season meetings. It’s free admission for the 7 p.m. tipoff, and the game also is being televised on Olelo (Ch. 53).
Artie Wilson’s Electricians (9-2) got 20 points from Derrick Low on Thursday in a 96-81 semifinal victory over Wealth Strategy Partners. Chosen Few (8-2), coached by John Lane, was led by Kyle Pape (25 points) and Matt Ching (21) in an 85-70 semifinal win over National Fire Protection.
The Electricians won the summer title in 2015, 2012 and 2011, while Chosen does not have any recent titles to its name.
57th HIBT opens today off Kona
Twenty-eight teams from seven countries are entered in the 57th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament that gets underway this morning off Kailua-Kona.
Included in the field are Team Fantasia, the 2015 Japan International Billfish Tournament champion, and Yorkeys Knob GFC, the defending Australian IBT champion. The opening ceremony begins at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Kailua Pier.
The competition runs through Wednesday.
