Talk show host Stephen Colbert performs on the floor of the Republican National Convention at Quicken Loans Arena during a taping of his program in Cleveland on July 17.

BEVERLY HILLS » Stephen Colbert, who capitalized on the political conventions with live airings of his late-night show, will do the same for the presidential and vice presidential debates.

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will air live on CBS after the scheduled Sept. 26 and Oct. 19 debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and following the Tim Kaine-Mike Pence debate Oct. 4, the network said today.

Colbert, who is in his first-season transition from his Comedy Central series “The Colbert Report,” clearly reveled in making his CBS show more topical with convention comedy.

It also yielded what the network called his “biggest viral clips to date,” a measure beyond ratings of how much attention a show is attracting. Those popular bits: fellow Comedy Central alumnus Jon Stewart’s guest appearance and Broadway star Laura Benanti’s impersonation of Melania Trump.

The host also has introduced a version of the faux Colbert he played on “Colbert Report,” using him to crack biting political jokes. Colbert told viewers that lawyers from his old company said the blowhard cable news host he had played was not his intellectual property — so he introduced “Stephen Colbert’s identical cousin.”

CBS entertainment chief Glenn Geller was asked at a meeting of TV critics today if negotiations were underway to allow Colbert to use more of his old character.

Geller ducked the question, saying that Colbert addressed it on his show and that he would let him speak for himself.

How any sensible person who has reviewed the current and past facts could actually vote for that demo nominated thing is beyond me…

  • Don’t you mean the Johnson/trump/Clinton debates? As the two joker candidates lose votes daily, Johnson is gaining votes hourly. Plus think of how much more interesting these debates could be with Johnson on stage shining the light of Liberty.

    • I like Johnson and only disagree with his platform in a few areas but he is not “gaining votes.” Nobody is voting nor will vote until November. In all of the current polls, he’s still floating along at the same sub 10% mark where he’s been for the last three months. His trend line is flat. The way it stands now he’s still unelectable with less than half of the traction that Ross Perot (also unelectable) had in the 1992 election. The sad take-away is that a vote for Mr. Johnson is a vote for the Republican or Democratic candidate you most dislike; whoever that may be.

  • The mayor of Fairfax City, Virginia, who supports Hillary Clinton, was arrested Thursday for allegedly giving methamphetamine to an undercover detective in exchange for sex, according to Fairfax County police.

The mayor, who has held office in the Washington, D.C. suburb since 2012, was allegedly trading meth for sex on a website used to set up male-on-male sexual encounters.

Let’s see what happens when the going gets tough for Crooked Hilliary.

      • Btain , Crooked Hilliary isn’t particular either. She’s got the father of the guy who killed 49 queens, the Mayor of Fairfax who got caught in a meth for sex sting man on man. A vote is a vote, she doesn’t care where it comes from.

  • hope they cushion the floor behind the female felon and have a medical trauma team standing by to give her oxygen or an i.v. during intermission.

don’t want the nation to view an empty podium while the female felon recovers from the strenuous walk to and from the dressing room.

    • Std, I don’t know if you watched Phelps. He’s got these red spots on his body. I found out that they use heated bottles to draw the blood to the surface. If you see Hilliary with red spots that’s what it’s from. It’s supposed to increase circulation.

  • Murder Conspiracy?

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange implied in an interview that a murdered Democratic National Committee staffer was the source of a trove of damaging emails the rogue website posted just days before the party’s convention.

  • This is news? Used to like Colbert but got tired of the same jokes which are always about Trump. Granted Trump is a character but gee, try joke about Clinton at least once a week.

  • I presume “free trade” will be brought up during the debate and I would hope the commentator would bring up free trade with the USA and Hawaii and Alaska????????
