The redeveloped landscape of Kakaako will be home to the full economic spectrum of residential and business inhabitants, and some special allowances have been given to make that happen.
One is a 50 percent discounted rate on property taxes for the myriad automotive shops and other small businesses in a strip between Cooke and Piikoi streets. Those who patronize these established businesses are happy to see them given a reason to stay. But that allowance can’t last forever. The bill enabling it was said to create a “demonstration project” that could be replicated elsewhere on the rail route.
Our bet: It more likely will be phased out at some point, as an economic transformation of the community takes hold.
Rolo finally decides with whom to roll
Some might criticize University of Hawaii football coach Nick “Rolo” Rolovich for taking so long to decide who should be the Rainbow Warriors’ starting quarterback for the season that starts Aug. 26 against California in Sydney, Australia — it will be fifth-year senior Ikaika Woolsey.
But Rolovich did, after all, have seven candidates to choose from, so maybe the delay was reasonable. Rolo is a former QB himself (for UH, NFL Europe and the Arena Football League), as well as a former quarterbacks coach, so his judgment here has to be respected. Let’s hope he made the right choice. Go Bows!
