Clinton receives first intelligence briefing as nominee

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, seen in silhouette center, arrives at an FBI office in White Plains, N.Y. for a national security briefing.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. >> Hillary Clinton received her first national security briefing Saturday as the Democratic presidential nominee, meeting with intelligence officials for an overview of the major threats facing the nation around the globe.

Clinton attended the briefing for more than two hours at the FBI office in White Plains, New York, near her suburban New York City home. Republican Donald Trump received his briefing earlier this month, a customary move for major party nominees but one that has been the subject of a political tussle during the campaign.

Trump was campaigning on Saturday in Iowa, headlining Republican Sen. Joni Ernst’s annual “Roast and Ride” fundraiser at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The celebrity businessman was not planning to join the 42-mile motorcycle ride that is part of the event but bringing his campaign to a state where polls show a tight contest, a rare bright spot for Trump amid a sea of challenging battleground states.

The activities capped a week that saw some of the harshest exchanges between the two presidential rivals, with Clinton asserting in a fiery Reno, Nevada, speech on Thursday that Trump was stoking a “radical fringe” within the Republican Party, including anti-Semites and white supremacists. Trump, who is trying to win over moderate voters and minorities who have been unsettled by some of his provocative remarks and policy proposals, has tried to paint Clinton as a racist.

The Republican released an online video that includes footage of the former first lady referring to some young criminals as “super predators” in the 1990s. The video also shows Clinton’s former Democratic rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders, denouncing the phrase as “a racist term.” Clinton has since apologized.

Clinton has said that Trump and his supporters have taken on extremist views, casting the race in a Friday MSNBC interview as “not a normal choice between a Republican and a Democrat.”

The back-and-forth also has been waged in the national security space.

As President Barack Obama’s secretary of state, Clinton held a high security clearance and received a copy of the President’s Daily Brief — the highest-level U.S. intelligence document that includes sensitive intelligence and analysis from around the world.

Saturday’s briefing was Clinton’s first since becoming her party’s nominee and she did not receive it with any aides present, her campaign said. Trump received his first briefing earlier this month and was accompanied by retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

The briefings, which are delivered by career staffers from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, have been traditional for presidential nominees for more than 60 years to ensure a smooth transition for the next commander in chief. But the lead-up to the meetings for both candidates have been steeped in politics.

Prior to Trump’s briefing, leading Democrats questioned whether the celebrity businessman could responsibly handle receiving sensitive information because of some of his comments, including the suggestion that Russia should attempt to hack Clinton’s emails.

Trump and his supporters have said that Clinton’s use of a private email server and FBI Director James Comey’s rebuke of her “extremely careless” handling of classified information at the State Department should bar her from receiving the briefing.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, meanwhile, wrote National Intelligence Director James Clapper, saying that many questions remain about how Clinton handled her email and requested she not receive the intelligence overview for the remainder of the campaign.

But Clapper rejected Ryan’s request, responding that the meetings would be provided on a non-partisan basis. “I do not intend to withhold briefings from any officially nominated, eligible candidate,” Clapper wrote.

Trump is also trying to shore up his standing with Latino voters. In Las Vegas, Trump met Friday with two dozen Latino supporters to discuss strategies for boosting Hispanic turnout in the swing state. He has sought to make the case that his economic policies would be better for small minority-owned businesses than those of Clinton.

“People don’t know how well we’re doing with the Hispanics, the Latinos,” Trump said at his hotel just off the Vegas Strip. “We’re doing really well.”

Trump has suggested that minorities have been left behind by Democratic economic policies and hammered the nation’s sluggish GDP growth as “a catastrophe.”

But he has continued to send mixed signals about a key issue for many Latinos: immigration. While he has not wavered on his desire to build an impenetrable wall along the border with Mexico, he exhibited indecisiveness in recent days about his plan to deport 11 million immigrants living in the U.S. illegally.

Aides have said he would announce his immigration policy in a speech in the coming days, but his campaign has yet to set a date.

The director of the FBI has already told everyone that this woman handled classified information with complete disregard for national security. Utter incompetance. How the heck does she even get the bus schedule? Oh, I forgot. The liberal media is in the tank for her, along with the most corrupt administration the United States has ever had. Good bye America, freedom, and hope for individual liberty. It’s been a good run, but secular progressives have destroyed the fabric of our society. When black, hispanic, and homosexual votes matter more than anything else, you can kiss it all goodbye. The Clintons are taking millions, and rest of us poor schmoos are paying for it. Way to go takers. You know who you are.

Thanks for the Fox News smear report. Fortunately the polls indicate most voters recognize Fox News is nothing but a voice for the unhinged.

      • BlueEyedWhiteDevil says:

What does the fact that Clinton was “extremely careless” with information as stated by Comey have to do with Fox news?
Your news sources rationalize, and excuse her criminal negligence no doubt.
About the polls, the people Trump is appealing too haven’t voted since Reagan, and may have never voted at all. Those people are not polled, only registered voters are polled as likely voters.
I think you are going to have a bad November.

      • menloboy says:

I don’t think you have a Smart TV that can get Fox News!

      • Ronin006 says:

OldDiver, you don’t understand why the Hillary continues to do well in the polls so I will tell you. The people who salivate just hearing her name are clueless, brain dead, no-information Democrats who still have not heard of Benghazi, Libya, Syria, the email scandal, the Clinton Foundation or anything of relevance. And I dare say not one of them can name a single thing Hillary accomplished as a U.S. Senator or as Secretary of State. Can you?

        • pilot16 says:

OD’s brains now defunct due to being at depth too long. For the record, Yes, Clinton’s lies were told directly to the faces of our representatives at a congressional hearing. Similarly, the Director of the FBI did the same, underscoring under direct questioning by Trey Gody, the plethora of lies Clinton told. It had nothing to do with FOXNews. ONLY to the extent that FOXNews is the only media outlet reporting consistently that Clinton is a liar.

Poor Ron, The Donald supporters should be the last ones to criticize Hillary supporters for ignorance. The problem with you far right wackos is that you are filled with imaginary fears with little substance. How many hours does Hillary have to testify before you realize that there is nothing there. Lets take Benghazi. It was a shame that 4 Americans were killed in an attack there but please stop making such a big deal out of it. We are in a “war” you know. (Even though it was never formally declared by congress) So where were you hypocrites when 60 or so people were killed in similar attacks during the G W Bush administration? Out to lunch? No, those people didn’t count as they were not Americans? Please explain. Why the big concern over the deaths at Benghazi while ignoring the previous attacks under your hero GW. I won’t even mention GW’s biggest mistake of sleeping on 9/11. Hell, if we had a democratic president then, you republicans would have demanded his impeachment for incompetence. But no, GW is just a good old boy who made a mistake of ignoring a daily briefing memo. So much for security and consistency.

lol, pilot, no one compares to republicans when it comes to lying. Say have you found those WMDs that you republicans were so sure existed but people like Scott Ritter knew was false? Thing is when republicans lie, people die. Most that can be said about Hillary is that when she lies, Bill gets richer? lol

        • Ikefromeli says:

Hmmmn, then Ronin you might want to explain the following: Trump’s number one demographic are uneducated and underemployed white males–conversely, the demographic he does the worse with are college educated females, followed by college educated people of color.

          Please illuminate us on why??

Sadly the election process won’t be amended anytime soon, especially in republican states. Talked about rigged elections, republicans take the cake. Oh, to have old time republicans around but sadly, they have mostly died off and been replaced by witch doctors.

Trump reforms to be rolled out in the near future —

Obamacare repeal and replacement—Obamacare will cost the economy 2 million full time jobs over the next decade. Hillary Clinton would expand Obamacare and create fully government-run socialized medicine.
Infrastructure—28 percent of our roads are in substandard condition and 24 percent of bridges are structurally deficient or worse. Trump’s plan will provide the growth to boost our infrastructure, Hillary Clinton’s will not.
Childcare— Childcare is now the single greatest expense for most American families — even exceeding the cost of housing in much of the country. Trump will allow families to exclude childcare costs from income, benefitting every family. Hillary will not.
Crime— Homicides last year increased by 17 percent in America’s fifty largest cities. That’s the largest increase in 25 years. More than 2,000 have been shot in Chicago since January of this year alone. Donald Trump is the law and order candidate in this Presidential race.

      • Boots says:

Yes Sarge, lets get rid of Obama care and just replace it with an expanded version of medicare for all. But no, you just want to keep government insurance for yourself.

5 Points On Trump’s Indictment Of Clinton As A Lying, Scheming Criminal

In between “Lock her up!” chants from the crowd, Donald Trump ramped up his rhetoric at a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Thursday afternoon, painting Hillary Clinton as lying, corrupt, and running the State Department as a criminal enterprise.

“Hillary Clinton’s actions constitute all of the elements of a major criminal enterprise,” he told the crowd.

Trump has accused Clinton of criminality for weeks, in a series of unusually direct and unreserved attacks by a major party nominee. But Thursday’s speech was a more comprehensive indictment that linked five separate lines of attack: Clinton’s meeting with Clinton Foundation donors as secretary of state, her use of a private email server, her speeches to Wall Street, the Benghazi attack, and Trump’s claims that the November election is rigged

          Wall Street Speeches
Trump began his indictment of Clinton by describing himself as self-funded and painting Clinton as in the pocket of Wall Street. He noted that Clinton was paid for speeches at Wall Street banks after she finished her tenure as secretary of state.

“In this fight, we are taking on some very entrenched and well-financed interests. Money is pouring into her campaign,” Trump said, referring to Clinton. “These are the same people who pay Hillary $10,000 dollars a minute for a speech.”

“These are the Wall Street firms who paid Hillary Clinton a quarter of a million dollars each time she delivered her secret remarks,” he added.

          The Clinton Foundation
Over the past week, Trump has latched onto newly released emails showing that the foundation asked for Clinton to meet with prominent foundation donors while she was secretary of state. During his Thursday speech, Trump used his harshest rhetoric yet to describe the reports on Clinton’s meetings as secretary of state, called her a criminal.

“The voters have always known that our leadership in Washington D.C. is corrupt, and that the system is very badly rigged,” he said in New Hampshire. “But this week the curtain was truly lifted. The corruption was revealed for all to see. The veil was pulled back on a vast criminal enterprise run out of the State Department by Hillary Clinton.”

Trump said that Clinton Foundation donors “are people that want things for their donation.”

He said that Clinton “ran the State Department like a personal hedge fund.”

“It is hard to tell where the Clinton Foundation ends, and where the State Department begins,” he said. “Access and favors were sold for cash. It’s called Pay-For-Play.”

Trump listed the entities he claims received favorable treatment from Clinton at the State Department:

The examples are too many to name here in full, and I’ve gone over some in recent days. They include the deal to sell 20 percent of U.S. Uranium to Russia, or the favorable treatment for UBS. … It includes the exemption of Telecom Giant Ericsson from government sanctions. It includes efforts to put a Foundation donor – with no national security experience at all – onto a highly-sensitive national security panel with access to top secret information. It includes Foundation donors getting lucrative contracts in Haiti – all while the people of Haiti suffered horribly.
          Bill Clinton Profited
Trump also claimed that Clinton used her position at the State Department to help her family financially. While alleging that Clinton did favors for foundation donors, Trump said that Clinton’s dealings at the State Department helped her husband.

“Bill Clinton’s total speaking fees rose 44 percent while Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State – often raking in money from people who had business or matters before the State Department,” Trump said.

          The Email Server
The main narrative Trump has used throughout the campaign to attack Clinton as corrupt is Clinton’s decision to use a private email server while she worked for the State Department. The Republican nominee touched on this during his speech on Thursday.

“She created a private illegal email server in order to hide her corrupt dealings. She did so knowing full well it would put American lives at risk by making classified information highly vulnerable to foreign hacking,” he said, adding that she deleted emails from the server to “cover up her crime.”

He accused Clinton of deleting emails to hide the fact that she “sold her office to corporations and foreign governments.”

          Perjury!

Trump also claimed that Clinton lied about her private email server to cover up her corruption.
“As a further element of the criminal cover-up, she claimed under penalty of perjury that she turned over all of her work related emails. We now know this to be one more massive Clinton lie and deception,” he said on Thursday. “The FBI found thousands of work-related emails she failed to turn over, including the new discovery this week of 15,000 more work-related emails she did not disclose.”

        • Cellodad says:

I thought it worth a few moments to take a look. It turns out that violent crime and homicides in the US peaked right around the time of the presidencies of Ford, Reagan, and Bush 1 with some spill-over into the term of Carter. Since the early 1990s violent crime and homicide have declined pretty steadily with homicides below the levels of 1960. (In fact, crime rates in the US seem to parallel the Baby Boomer generation losing its hair, teeth, hearing, waistline, eyesight, hips, and knees. Generally as people get older they are less likely to commit major crimes and the Boomers were a pretty big bulge in our population profile. Interestingly though, violent crimes per 100,000 have been steadily declining._

This is old hat for her since she had to brief others on security to when she headed the state department. Even Republicans stated that they were impressed with her briefings.
    https://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/democratic-senator-gop-senators-secretly-support-hillary-cli?utm_term=.raLk3Rl0w#.pp0BYjZpo
“I can remember sitting down in the secure facility in the basement of the Capitol getting a briefing from her on a highly classified matter and a bunch of Republican senators were sitting in front of me,” he continued. “Two of them, her very prominent antagonists in this election, and one looked over at the other and said ‘boy, she’s good.’ The other one leaned back and said, ‘yeah, she’s really good.’ And that’s the Hillary that they know. Not the talking points Hillary or the caricature, but the real person.”

    • sarge22 says:

Lock her up. Guilty on all counts. “Clinton had repeatedly said she did not have any classified emails on her server, but the results of the FBI investigation show that claim was incorrect.

Of the tens of thousands of emails investigators reviewed, 113 contained classified information, and three of those had classification markers. FBI Director James Comey has said Clinton should have known that some of the 113 were classified, but others she might have understandably missed.”
