The Hawaii men’s basketball team rounded out its coaching staff for the 2016-17 season with the announced hiring of Todd Okeson on Friday.
Okeson, 34, a former point guard at Nevada, replaced Jamie Smith as director of basketball operations. Smith served in that capacity for the past season and a half, including under Eran Ganot for his first full season as head coach.
“We’re excited that Todd and his wonderful family will be joining our program,” Ganot said in a UH release. “Todd possesses all the qualities we’re looking for. First and foremost, he’s a man of impeccable character. He has strong values and will be a terrific mentor for our student-athletes. He’s also very experienced — he’s been in both coaching and operations and has had a hand in every facet of running a program. Todd will bolster an already strong coaching staff we having coming back and enable us to continue to move forward from an operational standpoint.”
Okeson, who played against UH in the WAC and started for the Wolf Pack’s NCAA Sweet 16 team in 2004, was most recently a three-year assistant at Southern Utah before his boss, Nick Robinson, was fired after a 5-24 season. Okeson served as interim head coach there for about a month.
His duties at UH will include preparing travel itineraries and practice scheduling, but no on-court coaching. He said his wife and two children will join him in the islands in the near future.
“I love working with people, using my knowledge from when I played, maybe what worked, what didn’t work,” Okeson said. “This is what I do, what I love to do. I’m just happy to still be doing it, to be honest with you.”
