3 fishermen rescued from sinking boat
Three fishermen were rescued Monday after their homemade boat sank off Launiupoko Beach Park in Lahaina, Maui firefighters said.
The fishermen, ages 70, 50 and 30, were anchored and fishing when their 23-foot boat, Sonnie Boy, suddenly began filling with water about 500 yards offshore, firefighters said.
Firefighters responded at about 3:20 a.m.
The U.S. Coast Guard broadcast a request for assistance over marine radio and a private boat, Scorpio, responded and picked up the men, who were in the water with their life jackets on.
A fire rescue boat met the private vessel and took the men, who were in good condition, to the Mala boat ramp in Lahaina at about 5 p.m. Family members picked up the men.
A Coast Guard response boat notified the mariners of the location of the anchored, partially submerged boat. The owner, the 70-year-old man, is responsible for the boat’s salvage and recovery.
