Vehicle break-ins at 5 schools prompt DOE warning to drivers
The Department of Education is encouraging drivers to secure their vehicles in school parking lots following a string of vehicle break-ins at five Oahu elementary schools.
The DOE sent out a news release about the break-ins, which occurred during afterschool hours. In each case, vehicle windows were broken and small items taken, including purses, bags, cellphones and laptops.
A spokeswoman said the incidents happened this month at Manoa, Noelani, Wilson, Aina Haina and Waialae elementary schools. Some private schools also reported similar incidents, including Honolulu Christian Preschool.
“Parents are reminded to be vigilant and always remove valuables or hide them from direct sight,” DOE spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said in a statement. “Although there is normally lots of activity on campuses during afterschool hours, such crimes of opportunity can take place in seconds.”

Prosecutors dont bother with burglaries or car thefts. Thats why so much on Oahu.
But you do something really serious like jaywalk and you will really be in trouble.
This has become a real problem with local hoods staking out preschools and elementary schools waiting to smash and grab. Scary city.
Manoa, Noelani, Wilson, Aina Haina and Waialae elementary schools are in the supposedly “high class” Oahu neighborhoods of Manoa, Diamond Head and Kahala areas. Don’t think they are “local hoods” but from other areas of Oahu, or possibly vagrants who have found a ‘target rich’ environment where everyone is trusting and don’t even think of getting jacked while walking on their home streets or getting their cars broken into.
they are all local (i.e from Oahu). I am surprised that SA has just gotten on this story as it has been well-known in the school community for well over a year.
SA has lousy reporters. This is what we get from having a one paper town. We always read yesterday’s papers in SA.
Not that I think theft is ok, but what kind of st up id person leaves purses, bags, cellphones and laptops in a car???

I think you answered your own question SteveToo….stupid people. If you allow strangers to view your inventory whether it’s a car or your house, you’re giving them an opportunity. And, that’s what these low lives are looking for. And, Kokocats, SteveToo is not being above it all…he’s being smart. Try it sometimes.
