I believe that you need to get out of your comfort zone in order to be successful. “Do One Thing Every Day That Scares You: A Journal” (Potter Style, $12.95), by Robie Rogge and Dian Smith, offers words of encouragement for facing fears and lets me log my daily displays of courage, big and small, under the quotes and suggestions on each page. And, hopefully, as I record my successes, the thoughts “I can’t” and “It’s too difficult” will be erased from my consciousness. — Nancy Arcayna
Simple sunscreen stays put for surf sessions
Despite the joy I get from maintaining a tan, I still worried about the damage from harmful UVA/UVB rays that comes with it — until I discovered Real SunCover, a zinc oxide-based sunscreen made with natural ingredients. My favorite is the half-ounce stick ($30) that contains only four ingredients — zinc oxide, coconut oil, cocoa powder and beeswax — and stays on for the duration of my lengthy surf sessions.
Real SunCover was created by David Kelly, owner of Hawaiian South Shore at 320 Ward Ave., which also sells it in clear and tinted formulas ($15 for a 1-ounce tube). It’s a little pricey but it’s worth it to be able to understand all the ingredients of the formula I’m rubbing on my face. I’ve tried numerous sunscreens, from the cheapest to the most expensive varieties, and Real SunCover is by far the best for me. Call 597-9055 or visit hawaiiansouthshore.com. — Talia Higgins, Kapolei
Korean soap is packed with 11 herbs
I’m loving everything Korean right now, from K-dramas to kim chee and cosmetics. Recently, I learned about Conju Princess Soap during a demo at GNC Kahala. It contains 11 herbs (ginseng, bamboo salt, shiso, sponge gourd and more) and is an amazing find for people with sensitive skin like me. It cleanses but does not feel dry, and clears acne and blemishes without irritation. Now I’m using it from head to toe. My fiance started shaving with it and loves how easily it lathers. The soap is $20 at select GNC stores. For other retailers, visit conju.us. — G. Bailie, Honolulu
Brunch and vendors sweeten up Sundays
Morimoto Waikiki inside The Modern Honolulu has launched a monthly brunch and market event featuring $5 bloody marys (and mimosas!) served in Morimoto’s stylish dining room or on the lanai, making this a tempting attraction for hardworking locals and jet-setters alike. It takes place the last Sunday of each month, with dishes including sauteed shrimp on a fried-rice croquette with miso aioli, at left, chocolate-chip pancakes, buttermilk biscuits with foie gras gravy, house-made “spam” with a sunny- side-up egg and a pan-fried pork chop, priced at $12 to $20.
The local vendors at the “market” part of the equation include Posh Hawaii, a distributor of cutely packaged skin care products, with many items under $10. Other confirmed vendors this Sunday are Beach Wahine, Ocean Secrets, Flower Eyes and Hooululani Jewelry. — Elizabeth Kieszkowski
Tote bags ensure players are set for Pokemon hunts
Carrying a “Pokemon Go” theme, these jumbo tote bags ($20) from the Little Craft Shack are perfect for hauling snacks and spare battery packs to keep both you and your phone powered up on marathon Pokemon-hunting treks. Lynn Lum designed several styles, including the Hunting in Paradise illustration that features Pikachu in a haku lei. The 19-by-15-inch canvas bags provide plenty of room for all your gear and any critters you might pick up along the way. Find them at the Season’s Best Craft Fair Oct. 21-23 at the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall or contact Lum at lcs@lava.net. — Donica Kaneshiro
