It’s not often that one hears about dogs being snatched from the Hawaiian Humane Society — turned in, yes, adopted, yes, but not simply taken. So it was good news that one of them was recovered Thursday, after both went missing Tuesday; a man has been arrested. Let’s hope the second dog, a terrier mix named Pebble, is found safe and sound.
The normal adoption fee is $85 for a dog or cat (plus $10 county dog license), but there are many discounts to be had, including: half-price adoptions every Wednesday; free older dog or cat for seniors 60 and older; half-off dog adoption in October. See more online at hawaiianhumane.org.
Maui costume raises hackles
OK, so Disney took quite a leap depicting the demigod Maui, a beloved figure in the Hawaiian pantheon, central to many creation stories of Pacific cultures. He’s now a character in “Moana,” the studio’s latest animated epic.
His depiction has raised some hackles among Hawaiians and other Pacific groups. The last straw seems to have been the marketing of a child’s Maui costume for Halloween, with such an outcry that Disney pulled it from stores.
Critics charge that it’s a culturally insensitive affront, with its brown-skin costume festooned with tattoos and its curly wig.
There’s no data, but it seems unlikely that everyone is offended.
And the movie still presents an opportunity for Polynesia to raise its profile, even if it’s a cartoonish version.
