The coming weeks offer several ways to support Special Olympics Hawai‘i — one as easy as ordering a meal and another requiring derring-do.
Ward Village will host its annual Tip a Cop fundraiser Thursday and Friday, when off-duty law enforcement officers bus tables and serve food at several restaurants. The tips they collect will go toward supporting more than 1,000 athletes and coaches from throughout the state who will compete in basketball, bowling and bocce.
The officers will be at the following locations both days: Big City Diner from 7 to 9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5:30 to 9 p.m.; Kincaid’s from 5:30 to 9 p.m., and Ryan’s Grill from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Special Olympics Hawai‘i supporters with a daring streak are also invited to rappel 40 stories off the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa on Nov. 5. The annual Over the Edge fundraiser is in its eighth year and has raised more than $907,000 for the nonprofit, helping to provide services to more than 3,700 Special Olympians statewide.

Crawl out of your coffin, break out the cobwebs and put on a cauldron of witches’ brew — it’s time to get ready for Halloween.

Your spookiest tale could win our prize
Spin your most haunting tale of horror and the supernatural in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Today section’s annual Halloween Fiction Contest. Entries are limited to 650 words and must be original work never before published. The winner will receive a $200 cash prize, and their story will appear in the Today section Oct. 30. Second prize is $100.
The deadline for all entries is Oct. 17. One entry per person.
The contest is open to Hawaii residents only; Oahu Publications Inc. contributors, employees and their immediate family members are not eligible. The judges’ decision is final. By entering the contest, you are granting the Honolulu Star-Advertiser a royalty-free license to use your story in print and online. Winners’ names and photos will appear in the Star-Advertiser.
