Lifesaving local hero to be given big award for actions

    Colin Cook lost his left leg to a tiger shark while surfing in waters off Leftovers on the North Shore in October 2015. At the Queen’s Medical Center are Keoni Bowthorpe (a fellow surfer who saved Cook, holding the surfboard that Cook was on when he was attacked), left; Cook’s father, Glenn Cook; Cook; his mother, Mary Beth Cook; and his sister, Cassie Cook Burns.

Filmmaker Keoni Bowthorpe, who paddled straight into the fray when he saw a tiger shark attacking a fellow surfer off Oahu’s North Shore, today will receive the Carnegie Medal, a national honor, for his selfless courage. Read more
