The Hawaii Surf Team completed nine days of competition in Sao Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal, by taking home the gold medal in the Aloha Cup team competition, as well as bronze in the overall team standings.
Additionally, Brisa Hennesy was crowned the individual gold medalist in the Girls U-18 division.
Four Hawaii surfers in Cascais quarters
Hawaii natives Malia Manuel, Coco Ho, Tatiana Weston-Webb and Carissa Moore all advanced to the quarterfinals of the Cascais Women’s pro at Guincho, Portugal on Wednesday.
Manuel’s round 4 score of 15.33 gave her a comfortable victory over Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons (8.43). Ho’s 9.70 was enough to eliminate California’s Lakey Peterson (7.33). Weston-Webb and Moore advanced to the quarterfinals after each won their round 3 heats on Sept. 24.
In other round 4 action, Makaha’s Alessa Quizon was ousted by California’s Sage Erickson, 12.00 to 7.60.
Weston-Webb takes on France’s Johanne Defay in the first quarterfinal while Manuel faces California native Courtney Conlouge in the third quarterfinal. Ho and Moore will face off in the final quarterfinal. Dates have not yet been determined for the quarterfinals.
BYU-Hawaii swept by Academy of Art
The BYU-Hawaii volleyball team fell to Academy of Art 25-22, 28-26, 25-19 in San Francisco on Wednesday night.
Sinamoni Tonga led the Seasiders (2-11, 0-4 PacWest) with a double-double of 11 assists and a game-high 13 kills.
Melissa Brum had a double-double of her own for the Urban Knights (4-9, 2-2), tallying 12 kills and 10 digs.
>> The Chaminade volleyball team (7-6, 1-3) dropped a road match to Azusa Pacific 18-25, 25-20, 25-18. 28-26. The Silverswords were held to a season-low .139 attack percentage as Julianne Miller led the Cougars (6-7, 2-2) with 11 kills.
>> Hawaii Pacific outlasted Fresno Pacific 25-22, 23-25, 18-25, 25-14, 15-12, in a five-set thriller. The Sharks (7-6, 3-1) were led by Pomai Recca’s 22 digs and game-high 19 kills. Bissie DenHartog dished out 49 assists for the Sunbirds (3-6, 1-4).
>> Hawaii Hilo (4-5, 2-2) was swept by league-leading California Baptist (10-3, 5-0) 25-22, 25-12, 25-16. The Lancers were paced by Kristin McCord’s all-around effort of 13 kills, four blocks and six digs. Marley Strand-Nicolaisen led the Vulcans with 13 kills.
