Girl who died in double suicide at Turtle Bay is identified

CRAIG T. KOJIMA / APRIL 2016

Police said the man and girl were seen inflicting fatal injuries to themselves with a handgun at about 8:30 p.m. Friday at Turtle Bay Resort.

A 17-year-old girl who died in a double suicide at Turtle Bay Resort last week was identified today by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office as Tiana Pascual Dias of Kapolei.

She died of injuries from a gunshot wound to the head, and her death was listed as a suicide, the office said.

A 44-year-old man who died in the same incident has not been identified, the Medical Examiner’s Office said. His cause of death was also listed as injuries from a gunshot wound to the head and ruled a suicide.

Police said the man and girl were seen inflicting fatal injuries to themselves with a handgun at about 8:30 p.m. Friday at Turtle Bay Resort.

Paramedics arrived and found both people on the ground in the parking lot, each with a gunshot wound to the head. The two victims were taken to Kahuku Hospital, where they died.

Police said the two were not related, but knew each other and may have been in a relationship.

  2. nalogirl says:

Sad, seems like the Mom tried to keep him away from her. Hoohiki has the info. Prayers to the families.

From the KHON website, “Hawaii News Now sources identified the man as Shane Francisco.”

  4. HRS134 says:

I wonder who provided the gun. If it was Mr. Francisco, it must have a gun he used for work and he must have been assigned to work at Turtle Bay Resort. According to the court documents, he’s otherwise prohibited from possessing firearms.

    • JKertis says:

According to the Lautenberg Amendment, if you are prohibited from possessing guns you cannot use one at work. Many police officers have lost their jobs over this, as they should.

      • HRS134 says:

Not exactly how it works. The judge may make certain exceptions in TRO cases. “Work use” and “military service” are a common ones. If a person is CONVICTED of a crime outlined in the “Lautenberg Amendment” then the person is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. A TRO is not a “conviction”.

As usual SA is way behind the other local new teams that are reporting the story. Morning news reported Franciso was in the National Guard and is licensed to possess a firearm. Not sure if he is licensed to carry.. The mother of the girl tried to legally keep Francisco away from her daughter. The evidence and history is showing this case is more of a murder – suicide, not a double suicide. Francisco had serious problems and he wanted to kill himself but sounds like he was going to make sure the young girl who was in an unhealthy abusive relationship with Francisco, was going to have to die with him as well. Don’t let this story be swept under the rug as just some double suicide but reveal the truth of this abuser who had serious problems AND was allowed to legally possess and/or carry a gun because of supposedly his job, even when a TRO was filed against him.

agree…a real tragedy and likely a crime.

      • nodaddynotthebelt says:

I wholly agree with you. A TRO should have automatically sent up red flags and his ability to carry a handgun should have also been at least temporarily waived. If there is no such law in place, maybe there should be. Maybe a life might have been saved. This so tragic on so many levels.

Can someone provide the truth, some news reports are saying the man shot the girl first.

    • aomohoa says:

There was some confusion about that detail. I feel bad for his family but to be honest he didn’t appear to be a good person. My condolences go out to her family.A mother can only try. A teenage girl doesn’t always think clearly.

      • cojef says:

Could be, but if you are in a relationship your social maturity also is excellerated. Sexually yet to mature? As for the 44 year-old, much to be desired.

    • HRS134 says:

Forensic evidence will show got shot first and the likely timeline of events.

  6. Papakolea says:

This story breaks my heart. She was so young. Why could she not have been protected from this guy? Rest in Peace, Tiana.

  7. Pocho says:

So young and naive in following a 40+ year old in death. Probably not in his mind but in my mind he was a predator using his experiences to lure a child into a relationship. SAD, smh

  8. bluebowl says:

Statically teenage Girls do not commit suicide by shooting themselves.

  9. Upperkula says:

I take it there was only one gun at the scene, but how does this happen?…One of them say’s to the other, you first, the other say’s, no you first, WHAT, they took turn’s with the same gun, I have a hard time seeing this.

    • inverse says:

I wouldn’t be surprised the way it went down was once Francisco got the girl close to him, he made her grab the gun handle with one hand and then with his hands somewhat over her hand made sure the gun was pointing at her head and then he pulled the trigger which killed the girl. Then Francisco used the same gun to kill himself. Forensic evidence would show the gun was in the position in which the girl held the gun and would mostly like have gun powder residue on her “shooting” hand and it would be easy to claim this was double suicide but the eye witness testimony of a woman who saw Francisco yell, threaten and chase after the girl in the Turtle Bay parking lot just before the shooting, the history of the mother taking out a restraining order for Francisco to leave her daughter alone and for Franciso’s former or current wife stating she felt threatened when Francisco loaded his gun in front of her; NO way this can be classified as double suicide.

      • HRS134 says:

For all we know the man shot himself in front of her, and she was so distraught that she picked up the gun and shot herself. HPD arriving on scene found the gun in her hand, and by the positioning of the bodies determined that the man shot himself, hence the “double suicide” preliminary ruling. As the investigation continues, I’m sure there will be more information that HPD will process.

Why are people so quick to judge when a tragedy occurs? Let the investigation be completed then accurate details can be provided by LE. I wonder if they’re even gonna bother doing a toxicology screen on both of them. Illicit substances could explain what would otherwise be “abnormal behavior”.

  10. cbvierra says:

HPD is trying to do an easy way out deal, despite the tragedy of 2 people losing their lives. The woman who spoke on the news explaining what she heard is a clear indication that it was a murder suicide. If both parties shot themselves the guns shots would not been so close together.

  11. bluebowl says:

HPD sent a message to all other females in an abusive relationships neva mind we no can help!
