Report of steam release at Puna geothermal plant is another false alarm
Today was the fourth time in four days that Big Island firefighters responded to reports of a possible explosion and gas release at the geothermal power plant in Puna, which turned out to be a malfunction in the system, according to fire officials.
Firefighters and department’s hazardous materials team responded to reports of an explosion and gas release at the geothermal power plant at 2:52 a.m.
However, arriving firefighters were told by employees that there was a system malfunction and no explosion occurred and no steam was released.
Firefighters monitored the air quality in area for two hours, but did not detect any dangerous gas.
On Thursday, Puna Geothermal Venture reported a release of steam Thursday afternoon from one of its wells, Hawaii County Civil Defense reported.
Monitors in the community did not detect any of the dangerous gas, he said.
