Maui police warn public about man impersonating officer

Maui police warned the public today about a man impersonating a police officer and trying to pull a woman driver over in Pukalani.

Police said the man was driving an unmarked silver four-door sedan with flashing a blue-and-white light on his dashboard. On Monday, he tried to pull over the woman, but she didn’t feel safe and called police while continuing to drive.

The man took off in his vehicle when an officer arrived.

Police urged anyone who encounters a similar situation and feels unsure about the person making a traffic stop, to drive to a well-lit or public area where there are other people before stopping.

Try to get a license plate number and any identifying details of the vehicle and the driver, police said.

If the officer is not in uniform, ask for official police identification or call 911 to verify the stop.

Doesn’t MPD have all fleet vehicles? If so, that would be an excellent detail to share with the public.
