Wait — what’s that in the air? It smells like hope and optimism, which have been a long time coming for the University of Hawaii football team.
Thanks to a strong showing Saturday night, led by new starting quarterback Dru Brown, the Rainbow Warriors delivered a sweet 38-17 victory for first-year UH Coach Nick Rolovich against the Nevada team he’d helped coordinate for the past four years. UH’s performance, particularly in the first half, was well worth the price of admission.
Which brings this up: Make it a point to support Rolo and the guys this season. They travel to play San Jose State this Saturday — let’s cheer for another win — then will be back in town for the Oct. 15 homecoming game against UNLV. Time to pack Aloha Stadium beyond the 21,000 attendees this past Saturday.
Keep an eye on those Red Hill fuel tanks
It’s good news that the Navy has finished the installation of two more wells to monitor the quality and movement of groundwater near its massive Red Hill Bulk Fuel Facility — with two more planned next year.
The need could hardly be more urgent. The 20 fuel storage tanks sit underground, as close as about 100 feet above the aquifer that supplies one-quarter of Oahu’s drinking water.
A 27,000-gallon jet fuel leak from one of the tanks in 2014 led to the Navy agreeing to a 22-year plan to upgrade the facility to avoid future leaks. We hope it can be done much sooner than that.
A meeting to update the public on Red Hill is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at Moanalua Middle School.
