Three Hawaii male surfers and three female surfers advanced to today’s rounds at the World Surf League Championship Tours off Seignosse/Hossegor/Capbreton, France.
In Round 4 of the Quiksilver Pro, Keanu Asing, John John Florence and Sebastian Zietz all finished second in their respective heats and moved on to today’s Round 5. Asing faces Australian Stuart Kennedy, Florence is up against Brazilian Adriano de Souza and Zietz takes on Kolohe Andino of the U.S.
In the Roxy Pro, Carissa Moore and Coco Ho were in the Round 3 heat that was won by Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore, a six-time WSL champion. Moore finished second and will face Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons in Round 4.
Ho, who was third in the heat, meets Nikki Van Dijk today. Alyssa Quizon placed third in her heat — which was won by Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb — and takes on Australia’s Laura Enever.
Weston-Webb, last season’s Rookie of the Year, advanced directly to today’s quarterfinals.
Doane drops fourth straight fight
Waianae’s Russell Doane lost his fourth consecutive UFC fight when he was submitted in the first round by Mirsad Bektic to open the main card of UFC 204 on Saturday night in Manchester, England.
Doane (14-7, 2-4 UFC) landed more significant strikes but was taken down four times and eventually submitted by rear-naked choke with 38 seconds left in the round.
Bektic improved to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the UFC, winning his first fight in 17 months.
Hawaii Pacific edged by Concordia
Sven Koenig scored at the 64-minute mark for his 13th goal of the season, but the Hawaii Pacific men’s soccer team lost to Concordia (Calif.) 2-1 in double overtime at Atherton Field.
Asher Axe tied it just 40 seconds later and Isaac Gettis scored the game-winner at 103:10 for the Eagles (4-3-2, 3-1-0 PacWest). The Sharks dropped to 2-3-4, 2-1-2.

Lizette Luna scored at 38:20 and McKenna Carrillo added a goal at 71:54 for the Eagles (7-0-2, 3-0-1 PacWest). The Sharks dropped to 2-7-1, 2-3-0.

BYUH, HPU win Chaminade Invitational
The Brigham Young-Hawaii men and Hawaii Pacific women won titles Saturday at the Chaminade Invitational cross country meet at Sand Island State Park.
The Seasiders’ Max Moncour won his fifth consecutive men’s race with an 8K time of 27:00.
The Sharks’ Kimberly Carter claimed the 5K women’s event in 18:57.
The BYU-Hawaii men finished with 19 points and were followed by Hawaii Pacific (46) and Chaminade (67).
The HPU women had 19 points and were followed by BYU-Hawaii (49), Chaminade (94) and Hawaii-Hilo (96).
