Hawaii place kicker Rigoberto Sanchez kicked a field goal for the first score of the game during the first half against the Nevada Wolf Pack on Oct. 1 at Aloha Stadium. Sanchez was named the Mountain West Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

University of Hawaii kicker/punter Rigo Sanchez was named the Mountain West Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

Sanchez converted field goals of 24 and 35 yards in the Rainbow Warriors’ 34-17 victory over San Jose State on Saturday. It was their first road victory since 2014. Sanchez has made all five of his field-goal attempts this season.

Sanchez also averaged 44.5 yards on six punts.

He also is the kickoff specialist. Two kickoffs were launched from the UH 20 because of penalties.

“I love his approach,” UH head coach Nick Rolovich told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. “I love how important being a Warrior is to Rigo. He has probably an unappreciated leadership role on this team. And he just wants to win. His approach to his craft is at a high level. He’ll get a shot in the NFL because of how much he cares about it. He has great talent, but he works at it. He’s always looking for a way to be better. And that’s why he’ll be successful in life.”

A terrific kicker but I want to thank him for the terrible kick he had last year. The last minute field goal miss against New Mexico that turned the season into a nightmare for Chow and helped hasten his departure. The most fantastic miss of all time, thank you, thank you. Now that you got that out of the way, wish you nothing but success from now on.

The most consistent player on the team. NFL potential no doubt.

    Well deserved!
