Police are investigating a crash along the H-1 freeway in Aiea between the Aiea Heights Drive and Kaimakani Street overpasses.
A 30-year-old motorcyclist who was taken to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition after he slammed into the rear of a stopped vehicle on the H-1 freeway Thursday night has died.
His name has not been released at this time.
At about 7:50 p.m. Thursday, police said the man was traveling eastbound on the highway in a 2016 Honda motorcycle near the Aiea pedestrian overpass when he and another motorcyclist struck the rear of a 2006 Honda sedan that had stopped on the far left lane of the freeway after the vehicle was involved in a separate motor vehicle collision.
The 30-year-old man was taken to Queen’s in critical condition and died this morning. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.
This is the 42nd traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to 39 at the same time last year.
Police said speed was a factor.

The other motorcyclist, 29, was taken to a hospital in serious condition. A third motorcyclist who was also traveling with them suffered injuries when he fell onto the roadway when he attempted to avoid the second collision. He was transported to the hospital in stable condition. Both motorcyclists were wearing a helmet.
Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to call police.

Agree. How come the other cars on the H1 avoided crashing into the car? Inattention AND speed on motorcyclists part.

These guys on sport bikes, their nuts! They cut and weave through the streets like they own it. They give other responsible riders a bad reputation! Should have mandatory governors on street bikes!
Now someone is selling mini bikes you can drive on the roads? How stupid is this, that the state allows this? You can barely see the person on this thing!

Totally agree!! Not to mention cutting in and out of traffic, riding on the bike path reserved for bike-cyclist and jogger. No respect to other drivers and the rules of sharing the road.
Not just motorcycles, speed enforcement on H1 is really lacking.
yeah…everyone says that until THEY the one that gets stopped for speeding. Then they say “what about the OTHER guy?”
Drivers of stalled cars on freeways should receive a hefty fine. No stalled car equates to this not happening.

Cars stall from flat tires, overheating, unavoidable mechanical problems. Exactly why the no charge tow trucks are out there during peak traffic times, to get them off the road.
Question to ask is if the car was there from an accident, why no flashing lights, flares, recovery vehicles? Driver has a responsibility to activate the flashers, if lights not broken, or at least drive it off the road.
What about if ran out of gas?

Left most lane on the H1 freeway in the Pearl City and Aiea area has NO breakdown lane because of the freeway zipper system. Couple of years ago an HPD officer died when he stopped behind a stalled car in the left most lane on the H1 to render assistance another car hit him from behind and the police car caught fire with the officer inside. What they can do is if they had an automatic detector to identify a car stall in the left most lanes that flashing lights a mile before the stall tells oncoming drivers of the road hazard ahead. Don’t tell me it cannot be done or too expensive as we now have cars that can drive themselves on the highways. Hawaii taxpayer spending $10-20 BILLION on a train to nowhere but there is no money to improve road safety.
That is a major problem with the H1 freeway – no shoulders in many places where a person can move a problem car. Some areas of H1 even allow vehicles to drive on the shoulder. Yes, we have a traffic congestion problem too but taking away the shoulder areas is creating dangerous situations.

I loved riding a motorcycle but quit because of the danger. Motorcycles can do a lot of things well but stopping quickly is not one of them.
So true, but I wonder if every driver should have to spend some time on one to learn how important it is to pay attention to the road, especially when following someone, especially when deciding how much distance to keep between you and the vehicle you’re following. Too often it is bumper to bumper.
Modern sportbikes can stop on a dime, especially on dry pavement. Driver training teaches people to constantly scan and identify obstacles or problems as soon as possible and take necessary corrective action. Seems in this case they identified the problem too little late and possibly made things even worse by riding in a tight bunch that gave them no room to immediately slow down and/or maneuver out of the way of the stalled car. Add this car stalled in the left most lane on the H1 freeway with no breakdown lane on the left side made the situation 10 times worse.

Going 55 mph in 4th or 5th gear and coming to a screeching stop is almost impossible. Only thing to do is swerve but as someone mentioned, you have little chance riding if riding in a tight formation.
Negligent HOMICIDE???
That simply can’t be right.
What are they going to do, arrest the poor man who’s dead for killing himself by going too fast to see the wreck in front of him until it was too late?
Don’t think the Negligent Homicide case will reach the court system. Seems like the m/c rider died as a result of his own actions.
