Oregon sophomore linebacker Kaulana Apelu, a Kamehameha alumnus, got his first career start at linebacker on Saturday and had five tackles and an interception to help the Ducks beat Arizona State 54-35 to stop a five-game losing streak.
Apelu, who is 5 feet 11 and 200 pounds, walked on as a freshman at Oregon in 2015 after playing only one game as both a junior and a senior at Kamehameha because of knee injuries that required ACL surgery.
Apelu made his season debut in Oregon’s fourth game against Colorado and had five tackles and a fumble recovery. He had nine tackles in a 52-49 double-overtime loss to California two weeks ago to earn the start against the Sun Devils.
Apelu is one of nine players from Hawaii listed on the Oregon roster although junior defensive lineman Ratu Mafileo, a Moanalua alumnus, was forced to retire this season due to a back injury.
>> Stanford true freshman Nate Herbig, who graduated from Saint Louis earlier this year, earned his first collegiate start at right guard for the Cardinal in a 34-10 win over Arizona on Saturday.
Herbig blocked for Stanford running backs Christian McCaffrey and Bryce Love, who combined for 247 rushing yards in the win.
Herbig secured a key block on a 45-yard touchdown run by McCaffrey for Stanford’s opening score.
Late in the first half after an interception by Stanford quarterback Keller Chryst, Herbig tackled Dane Cruikshank on the interception return and forced a fumble that was recovered by the Cardinal.
It led to a Stanford field goal just before the end of the first half.
