Vehicle runs over, kills toddler in driveway
A vehicle, driven by a 36-year-old man, fatally struck a 1-year-old boy Monday afternoon in Kapalama, Honolulu police said.
The accident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. in the driveway of 1518 Auld Lane.
Police said the driver was reversing a red 2006 Toyota 4Runner when he hit the child.
The boy was taken by Emergency Medical Services to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, and died a short time later, police said.
EMS said paramedics performed advance life support while transporting the toddler.
A man who identified himself as the boy’s uncle said a relative was the driver of the SUV.

Neighbors said the family had recently moved into the neighborhood.
Sharon Kodama, who owns several apartments in the area, said one of her tenants saw the accident, and said the boy had been running around the vehicle.
The driver, while reversing, was “gunning the engine,” not realizing the child was under the vehicle’s tires, Kodama said. They heard screams shortly afterward.
Police classified the death as a non-traffic fatality since it occurred on private property.

Accident this surely was, but an adult somewhere is also surely responsible this tragedy. That’s not saying there will any formal punishment meted out. There almost never seems to be when the victim is child and the responsible adult a blood relative.
sometimes the death of a child is punishment enough.
Bad parenting! It happens here too often.
May God Bless. My condolences to the family.
A one-year-old shouldn’t be outside unsupervised. Whoever was supposed to be watching him is just as guilty.
Sad.
Pain. Guilt. Remorse. Grief. My condolences to the family. RIP, little one.
So sad, hard to understand why some people are so dumb!
ditto.
My deepest ALOHA to his ohana.
So sad. So sad.
We have so many smart people in this world. Why can’t someone come up with a simple solution to prevent this type of tragedy? I’m not so smart, but here’s an example of what I mean by a simple solution: require a simple device in every car that forces the driver to turn the ignition key, then get out of the car to press a button somewhere in the back and front of the car, then get back in to complete the engine starting process. This could be required for all new vehicles and a requirement to retrofit all current vehicles. Yeah, I know, dumb idea because it’s humbug. But there must be an answer.
My condolences to the family, and hopefully the good that will come out of this tragedy is a solution to prevent this from ever happening again.
Many newer vehicles come equipped with reverse cameras. You can also buy reverse cameras on amazon pretty cheap. Don’t know if it would have helped in this situation but it might have. You could also have reverse sensors installed. I have both and it helps when parallel parking in tight spots too.
There will never be enough technology to correct the failings of the human condition. Sadly some humans fail more miserably than others.
Wow what an unfortunate tragedy. My condolences to the family of the child and the driver of the vehicle. I can’t begin to imagine the pain they must be going through.
God, Bless this little Angel That you have just received. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this child.
Condolences to his Ohana.
Please withhold judgment. Not all facts have yet been reported. It may have been a truly unfortunate accident with unforeseen factors Many condolences to the family for this huge loss.
