A 61-year-old man died today after he became distressed while snorkeling in waters off of Waipuilani Park in Kihei.

He has been identified as Phillip Green of Dallas, Ore.

At about 10:05 a.m., police said Green was snorkeling when he ran into trouble and called for help. Green’s son and a bystander brought him to shore where emergency personnel performed life-saving measures to revive him to no avail.

Police said paramedics transported Green to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
