A 61-year-old man died Monday after he ran into trouble while snorkeling in waters off Waipuilani Park in Kihei, Maui.
He has been identified as Phillip Green of Dallas, Ore.
At about 10:05 a.m., police said, Green was snorkeling when he called for help. Green’s son and a bystander brought him to shore, where emergency personnel performed lifesaving measures to revive him, to no avail.
Police said paramedics took Green to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Man who died surfing off Big Island ID’d
A 63-year-old man who died while surfing in waters off Lighthouse Road on Hawaii island has been identified as John Willard of Waikoloa.
The incident happened at 10:16 a.m. Saturday at a surf spot in Hawi known as Lighthouse.
Other surfers found Willard floating facedown in the water and took him to shore.
Fire rescue personnel airlifted him to a waiting ambulance. He was taken to Kohala Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy has been ordered.
Fire put out in Waikiki parking garage
Firefighters extinguished a Waikiki residential high-rise fire Monday that was discovered in the parking garage.
The first unit on scene at 4:49 p.m. found smoke and flames coming from the fourth-floor parking garage at 444 Nahua St.
The blaze involved about three dozen mattresses and other furnishings in storage, fire Capt. David Jenkins said.
Police shut down Nahua Street at about 5 p.m. between Kuhio Avenue and Ala Wai Boulevard.
