>> The Play: QB Dru Brown finds WR Makoa Camanse-Stevens for a 43-yard pass play.
>> Impact: Three plays later, RB Steven Lakalaka scored on a 1-yard run. For just the second time in 12 games this season, Hawaii scored first, but it took nearly the entire first half for either offense to get going.
>> Hawaii coach Nick Rolovich: “We thought we had some schematic advantages with some of the formations and things we were doing.”
2. Lateral
>> Situation: Hawaii 7, Fresno State 0, 0:10 remaining second quarter, Fresno State ball, second-and-goal at Hawaii 1
>> The Play: QB Zach Kline throws a lateral to OL Christian Cronk, who drops into the backfield after lining up as a tight end. Cronk is all by himself, and runs into the end zone with the ball.
>> Impact: The game is tied after Fresno State’s only touchdown.
>> Rolovich: “What a ballsy call. I thought that was awesome.”
3. Roughed
>> Situation: Fresno State 13, Hawaii 7, 1:10 remaining fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, third-and-6 at Fresno State 18
>> The Play: WR Marcus Kemp drops a pass from Brown, but Brown is roughed on the play and the ball is moved up to the Fresno State 9.
>> Impact: Brown then threw complete to SB John Ursua for a first down at the 2, setting up the go-ahead touchdown by Lakalaka.
>> Brown: “I kind of saw (Bailey). I was looking at my read. As soon as I threw it, I knew I was going to get hit.”
4. Winning TD
>> Situation: Fresno State 13, Hawaii 7, 0:59 remaining fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, second-and-goal at Fresno State 2
>> The Play: RB Steven Lakalaka takes a handoff up the middle and with second effort plows into the end zone for a touchdown.
>> Impact: Hawaii scored the final points of the game on Lakalaka’s 12th touchdown of the season (tying him for 24th nationally) and K Rigoberto Sanchez’s extra point for the lead.
>> Lakalaka: “It looked like I just needed one more push there and I just did my best to finish the play.”
5. Block Party
>> Situation: Hawaii 14, Fresno State 13, 0:05 remaining fourth quarter, Fresno State ball, second-and-12 at Hawaii 26
>> The Play: DL Viane Moala blocks a 43-yard field goal attempt by K Kody Kroenig. The ball rolls dead at the 2-yard line.
>> Impact: The game ended on the blocked kick. It was the 6-foot-7 Moala’s second blocked field goal of the season and gave Hawaii — which finished 4-4 in the Mountain West conference — its fifth win overall of the season (most since 2010) and preserves its bowl-game hopes.
>> Kline: “Sometimes the football gods do some weird things. Sometimes you end up on the wrong side of it.”
