BYU-Hawaii senior Nannan “Dallas” Zhang qualified for the main draw of the Hawaii Open with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Hawaii Pacific senior Nicole Hoynaski on Monday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Zhang lost to Hoynaski in their last meeting, but won the rain-delayed rematch.
“Last time I tried to hit harder and tried make her run, but I made a lot of mistakes,” Zhang said. “This time I felt like I had to make my ball deeper and put more pressure on her and that worked well.”
Rain delayed the start of the first Women’s Tennis Association 125K Series event held in Hawaii. Matches scheduled for Monday night were moved to today.
Michaela Gordon also qualified for the main draw with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over Nicole Melichar. The main draw opened with Sara Sorribes Tomo defeating Tereza Mrdeza 6-3, 6-4.
