Top-seeded Shuai Zhang advanced to the quarterfinals of the inaugural Hawaii Open with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Marina Erakovic on Thursday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Zhang, ranked 23rd in the world, will next face eighth-seeded Samantha Crawford, a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Danielle Collins, today in the Women’s Tennis Association 125K Series event.
Fourth-seeded Catherine “Cici”’ Bellis opened Thursday’s play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Usue Maitane Arconada in just over 55 minutes. The 17-year-old will face Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain, who finished off a rain-delayed 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Asia Muhammad. Bellis and Sorribes Tormo meet today at 11 a.m. in the first quarterfinal match on center court.
Sachia Vickery, who upset second-seeded Nicole Gibbs on Tuesday, defeated Eri Hozumi 6-4, 6-1. Sixth-seeded Evgeniya Rodina of Russia set up a matchup with Vickery with a 6-2, 6-3 win over 17-year-old wild card Katie Swan.
Fifth-seeded Sabine Lisicki and Jacqueline Cako set up their quarterfinal matchup with wins on Wednesday.
The doubles competition got underway after being pushed back by rain on Wednesday. The top-seeded team of Hozumi and Miyu Kato of Japan swept BYU-Hawaii duo Nannan Zhang and Xin Wen 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Hozumi and Kato then advanced to the final with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cako and Akiko Omae.
Gibbs and Muhammad take on the team of Rodina and Olga Govortsova in the other semifinal this afternoon, with the doubles final scheduled for 6 p.m.
