Cuttings of the season-appropriate Christmas candle plant will be given away next month at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden.
The plant, also know by its less festive name, devil’s backbone, can be grown indoors and outdoors. The stem extends in a different direction each time a new leaf sprouts, which gives it a zigzag appearance. The Christmas candle blooms up to twice a year, and the leaves take on a pink tinge, adding color to the garden.
The plants need full to partial sun and grow between 2 and 3 feet high indoors and up to 6 feet outdoors. The leaves drop if the plant gets thirsty, so a good watering once a week is recommended.
Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden sponsors the monthly xeric seed and seedling giveaways, including information sheets with care instructions. The plant selection changes monthly, with distribution from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays; one seed packet or seedling per household.
Learn more about the giveaway and featured plants at boardofwatersupply.com and on Facebook, or call the garden at 748-5315.
