Two men were shot by police Thursday afternoon as they attempted to flee from officers who had boxed in the stolen vehicle they were in at a fast-food drive-thru at Mililani Town Center.
A 30-year-old man who was driving a stolen 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck was shot in the upper right back, while a 31-year-old man had apparent gunshot wounds to the hip and right elbow, according to city Emergency Medical Services personnel. Both were taken in serious condition to a hospital.
The driver allegedly rammed into an officer’s vehicle, and the truck “continued forward nearly striking an officer,” according to a Honolulu Police Department statement.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and second-degree criminal property damage. The 31-year-old was arrested on suspicion of second-degree unauthorized entry into a propelled vehicle and second-degree criminal property damage.
A 35-year-old female passenger, who was uninjured, was arrested on unrelated contempt warrants.
The Honolulu Police Department said it received an anonymous tip of a stolen vehicle at the Mililani Town Center’s Burger King, and a plainclothes unit with the Wahiawa district responded at 1:15 p.m.
Acting Assistant Chief Larry Lawson said during a news conference Thursday that the truck was stolen Wednesday from the Pearl City area.
After the pickup allegedly rammed into the police vehicle and nearly struck an an officer, the officer responded by opening fire at the two men while in the drive-thru at the Burger King, police said.
Lawson provided few details about what happened but said a police investigation would be conducted.
Kinji Martin said he had just left Times Supermarket when he saw police cars parked in front of Burger King. Martin said he parked in the back of Burger King and told his wife to stay in the car.
Martin, a student at the University of Hawaii at West Oahu, said he saw blood on a parked truck and on the street.
“It just looked really graphic,” said Martin, 29. “I guess I wasn’t as scared, but my wife was terrified. I’ve never seen any event comparable to this (in this community).”
Makaimoimo Street from Meheula Parkway to the entrance to the Mililani Town Center was shut down as police investigated and was reopened about 4-1/2 hours later.
Mililani High School went into lockdown for about a half-hour as police converged on the Burger King across the street from campus.
Travis Afuso, the school’s student body president, said he heard the lockdown announcement during his JROTC class at about 1:15 p.m. Afuso, a junior, said teachers locked the doors and shut the windows. “Initially I thought it was a shooter on campus. My mind was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what was going on?’” he said. “It was frightening.”
He said that in his three years at the high school, there had never been a lockdown. “This is very much an unusual event,” Afuso said. “This is quite a surprise. This is a very safe community.”
Mililani High Principal Fred Murphy said that within one minute of hearing the police cars’ sirens, the administration announced the lockdown over the school’s PA system.
“We took immediate and proactive steps to ensure the safety of students and staff,” Murphy said. “I’m incredibly grateful to the immediate response that our students and staff had to the situation.”
