The future of surfing squared off at the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach on Friday.
Hawaii 16-year-old Finn McGill won the highest-scoring heat in the second round of the competition.
McGill scored 8.77 on his first wave of the heat to finish with 15.87 points to fellow Hawaii surfer Joshua Moniz’s 15.60. Griffin Colapinto was third at 15.47 and Maxime Huscenot brought up the rear with 8.34.
The WSL said that McGill, Moniz (20 years old) and Colapinto (18) are the three youngest surfers in the event.
Hawaii’s Torrey Meister had the ride of the day on his way to a win in his second-round heat, executing three turns following the tube for a 9.23. His average wave score of 14.40 beat the 9.44 put up by Bino Lopes.
Patrick Gudauskas had the only other nine-point wave of the day.
The only third-round heat completed Friday had Australia’s Matt Wilkinson (10.97) and Ezekiel Lau of Hawaii (9.53) finishing in the top two spots to advance to the fourth round.
The third round is expected to resume today, surf permitting.
Moore advances on Maui
Hawaii champion Carissa Moore scored 11.50 points to beat fellow Hawaii surfer Alessa Quizon and advance to the quarterfinals of the Maui Women’s Pro at Honolua Bay.
Moore’s best rides came on her first two attempts for a 5.00 and 6.50. Quizon settled for a 4.77 average.
Moore will take on Malia Manuel of Hawaii in the quarterfinals.
Hawaii surfers Tatiana Weston-Webb and Coco Ho also made it into today’s quarterfinals, surf permitting.
