Kenya’s Edwin Ngetich Kiptoo won the Honolulu Marathon’s inaugural Kalakaua Merrie Mile on Saturday. Kiptoo chased down the elite female entrants, who started 27 seconds before the elite men, and finished in 3 minutes, 57.4 seconds.
Kiptoo pocketed $3,500 for the win. Michigan alumnae Nicole Sifuentes and Shannon Osika were the next two pro runners to cross the finish line, earning $1,500 and $1,000. Before the elite race, 1,330 runners ran the mile. Japan’s Yusei Nakao, who is running in today’s marathon, was the top finisher in 4:43. New Zealand’s Annika Pfitzinger was the top female in 5:04.
Chaminade earns first victory of season
The Chaminade women’s basketball team defeated Hawaii Hilo on the road, 59-54, for its first win of the season.
The Silverswords (1-5, 1-3 PacWest) were paced by Lilia Maio’s 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Sydney Mercer led the Vulcans (1-5, 1-3) with a game-high 22 points.
>> Safira Sheikh’s career-high 32 points lifted BYU-Hawaii (4-4, 2-2) past Dominican (5-4, 1-1) in an 85-75 road victory. It was her third straight 20-point game. Her sister, Marian Sheikh, added 17 points and two steals.
