Hawaii guard Noah Allen (32) drives to the basket over Illinois State center Daouda Ndiaye (4) during the second half of a 2016 Diamond Head Classic college basketball game between the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors and the Illinois State Redbirds on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Once again a slow start hurt Hawaii as it fell 71-45 to Illinois State in a first-round game of the Diamond Head Classic.

A gathering of 4,146 at the Stan Sheriff Center saw the Rainbow Warriors fall behind 10-0 and lose for the third consecutive time.

UH dropped to 4-6 and the Redbirds improved to 7-3. Deontae Hawkins led the Redbirds with 16 points and Phil Fayne added 14.

Gibson Johnson, Brocke Stepteau and Noah Allen scored 10 each for Hawaii, which shot a meager 23 percent from the field in the first half and little better for the entire game.

Hawaii plays Utah at 7:30 p.m. in a Friday consolation game, after Illinois State meets San Francisco at 5 p.m.

ISU led 33-25 at halftime, with Madison Williams scoring seven of his 11 points.

Paris Lee and MiKyle McIntosh both hit 3-pointers before Hawaii finally got on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer by Sheriff Drammeh.

Hawaii also fell behind 10-0 in its last game, a 75-62 loss to Princeton on Dec. 7. In that game the Rainbow Warriors played better at the outset of the second half. In this one, though, the Redbirds didn’t falter and UH’s shooting woes continued in its most lopsided loss of the season.

Another ignominious defeat with a 26 pt blowout although only 5 pt underdogs. The touted 4 on 1 offense falls flat on all cylinders and leads to a starting 10 pt deficit. The defense of Ganot’s predecessor, ball hawking, tough man to man, is gone. The layoff didn’t help a single bit and the team is predictable and vulnerable as always. Opponents
should also take advantage of the roll on the pick and roll since Ganot seems to insist on not switching off leaving the roll to the backet wide open. Forget about post-season play, Ganot won’t even come close. Ganot can’t recruit and he can’t coach but get ready to cough up a lot of money to support this first to worst team yet to win against a team
with a winning record. Ganot should stop making up excuses and hang his head in embarrassment.

Been watching UH men’s b-ball for decades; worst performance I’ve witnessed. Trend of last 3 games don’t bode well for league play.

growing pains back to the drawing board. GO WARRIORS.

    • buds4life says:

Going back to the drawing board would indicate there is a chance for vast improvement with more coaching. Sadly I doubt it.
The question going into this season wasn’t about Coach Ganot coaching ability but if he could recruit. Unfortunately the answer for his first class it’s a resounding no.
The nationally televised game could have helped in recruiting but instead the uninspired, embarrassing loss set back any positive recruiting effects.

      • barak181 says:

Well, considering that he was recruiting to replace basically the entire team with NCAA sanctions looming over his head the entire time, you can’t really judge his recruiting prowess based on this one class. There’s no way a impact JC player is going to transfer into a program that has a post-season ban in place.

    • Pocho says:

It is what it is. What is Ganot going to draw on the drawing board? lol, hard to play this being PC about it as Ganot has got what he’s got as far as personnel. Can’t blame the coach or players, Give coach the time to recruit better players and time will tell.

Now, why did UH give/extend Ganot’s contract and salary? Now that’s the BIG question, was the team’s NCAA apperance because of Ganot or was because of the players? Ganot had no hc coaching experience prior, how could UH give the man the contract extension and raise with only a year as a hc?

      • Pocho says:

It’s the samo samo year after year, if you can represent yourself well you can soak UH. I see Rolo getting a raise and contract extension following the Bowl appearance. Now I’m not saying Rolo doesn’t deserve it, but I think he’s got something going for him with the post season Bowl, he’s got 1 year hc’ing experince under his belt and he’s in the same position as Ganot to “soak” UH as much as he can right now.

If I was Rolo, I’d ask for all I could at this point in time. Get it while the goings good, there’s no bad talk off the coaching for all I know, no big problems with player/coaching personnel, no news is good news as far as players academics, etc.

UH is ripe for the pickings!

Pocho is correct. Skip this season. Hard to watch stuff.

  4. Amosilatus says:

The Bows always seemed a half step behind the other team, but mostly, they seemed confused. They need stronger leadership. Control, or the lack of it, seems to be a big problem.

  5. mctruck says:

Ganot had nothing left what with just one starter who is on medical leave till next season; and now we see he was not successful in recruiting replacements.
No player(s) stand out as leaders in any category, so it kind of leaves one wondering, “what else” is there?

    • mctruck says:

I’m with Pocho, wait and see what the next season’s recruiting brings. Until then keep cheering for this young team.

      • raiderDogs says:

He gave his only scholarship to a Kahuku senior that seems to be a good role player but far from being a star. So at this point it will take 2-3 years for a winning program. He just cannot recruit. Look at San Francisco that coach was up for our job and he has away better recruiting class with one year in the system. This is Ganot’s second year. First without Arnolds recruits.

  6. bleedgreen says:

Keep cheering, yes. Need time to see where the program is headed, but the team scored only 45 points. That is a dismal performance, regardless.

  7. McCully says:

Just no talent. Maybe in three years UH would be competitive. When you got a walk on was a starter, this speaks volumes.

  8. warfan808 says:

Is the talent really this bad , I don’t think so…..It looks to me more like NOOO effort by our guys compared to fighting and scraping for every loose ball and rebound we look like a high school team some times..Guys need to make up for lack of experience with effort and toughness…and the ncaa better make up thier freaking minds already too.

  9. Dai says:

We lost almost the entire team from last years banner season. The NCAA did a fairly good job of destroying our basketball program and may not be done yet. Coach Ganot has a really tough job of getting the kind of players to run his system. Last years team was players brought in by Gib Arnold. He gathered a great cast of players and it showed. Coach Ganot did a great coaching job with great athletes.
Here on out it’s the Coach Ganot Show and he needs to coach really hard this year. I do not see the athletic quality as on last years team and don’t expect much this year. That being said, I do not want to see the team quit under any circumstances. Play hard, play smart, play till the last horn. This is all we can ask of them.

  10. swagger says:

I wonder if Matlin knew one of the main reason last years team went to NCAA Tournament was not because of Ganot coaching ability but Gibs recruit players. When the second half just started both commentators was saying Hawaii plays better than the first half, gave me some hope but then again Hawaii got worst. This was Illin first road win also they are from east coast time zone 1:30 am instead Warriors look like the tired team. Ganot was acting like a season head coach demanding a extended contract, the prof is in the pudding. Fire Ganot!!

  11. ChrisJ says:

This season is not on Ganot. We have to accept the fact this year’s team is made up of Scout players. On any of our past teams, our current staraters would never get in a game except for a mop up role. It is what it is.

The sad reality is we will have to suffer through a couple of rebuilding years. We should continue to support Ganot.

    • TaiBow says:

Totally agree. This season is on the NCAA, and their blatant disregard for resolving the issue of the sanctions still hanging over the Hawaii B-Ball program. Coach Ganot did improve on Benji Taylor’s 2014-2015 record; and took last year’s team to the Big Dance. With good talent, Ganot has shown that he can put a well-coached and organized team on the floor. We just don’t have the “horses” this year. Still gotta support!

  12. hon2255 says:

Went to the game. As a season ticket holder. This was hard to watch. Team looks totally inept. We need a lot of turnover after the season. The new recruits are not D1 level. Very disappointed. They gave up so many dunks in their faces.

  13. 64hoo says:

look all you guys liked riley Wallace he had a team that went 1-26 but still rebuild into a better team 2 years after, so stop complaining and lets give ganot that chance. GO WARRIORS.
