Micah Kawano scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the first half as Kalani downed Roosevelt 38-29 in the OIA East boys basketball season opener for both teams.
The 5-foot-10 senior added a team-high seven rebounds. Kapaa Nishimura added 10 points and four rebounds for Kalani, which opened the game with a 13-0 run.
The Falcons extended it to 14 points before halftime, but Roosevelt chipped away and cut it to 28-23 after a drive to the bucket by Micah Visoria late in the third quarter.
Kalani pulled away in the fourth quarter with a five-out spread offense. The Falcons also forced seven Rough Riders turnovers and shot just well enough from the foul line (6-for-11) to stifle a comeback.
Jason Talbo paced Roosevelt’s injury-plagued lineup with nine points. Michael Hyun added eight points and seven boards. It was a struggle for most of the night, with post defenders Lio Ilalio and Christopher Lee out with injuries. Visoria played on an ankle injury and Shastyn Kekahuna just returned from injury this week.
“We’re banged up, but that’s no excuse. I don’t want to take anything away from Kalani,” Rough Riders coach Steve Hathaway said. “We just didn’t do anything. That kind of effort won’t even get us in the D-II playoffs.”
It was a rematch of last year’s OIA D-II finalists. Kalani won the regular-season game, but Roosevelt won the title matchup in dramatic fashion.
This time, the Falcons were composed and precise for much of the way. The Falcons won the battle on the boards 23-14 and shot 49 percent (11-for-23).
“They played together and we moved the ball. I’m pretty happy with our shot selection,” Kalani coach Nathan Davis said. “We kept our composure.”
Kawano was especially tough against Roosevelt’s zone and man defenses, attacking on cuts and getting to the free-throw line consistently in the first half. He shot 5-for-6 there in the first quarter and finished the game 9-for-10. As a team, the Falcons shot 16-for-25 from the charity stripe.
“Micah (Kawano) is capable as long as he’s taking good shots,” Davis said. “Roosevelt was missing some guys, so we wanted to attack inside.”
Their ability to spread the floor in the fourth quarter against Roosevelt’s man defense was big. Kawano was strong enough to play the post defensively when needed.
“Kapaa and Micah can play the 4 and 5 for us, and we can switch (defensively),” Davis added.
Kalani was missing Toby Mitchell, who is recovering from an offseason leg injury.
“He played a little last week, but his leg started to get sore,” Davis noted.
Jaemi Harris, another projected starter, did not play after breaking a team rule.
