The Toyota Hawaii Dream Car Art Contest is offering a new perk to rev up interest in its sixth annual competition: a 3-D print of the winning designs courtesy of the University of Hawaii’s College of Engineering.
The contest is open to artists age 15 and younger. Entries in three age categories — 7 and younger, 8 to 11, and 12 to 15 — will be accepted until Jan. 13. Ten entries in each age category will be selected for final judging in February. Judges include local artists Kamea Hadar and Mark Chai and Song K. Choi, assistant dean of the College of Engineering.
The grand-prize winner in each age category will win an iPad mini 4, with first and second runners-up receiving $100 each. The top three entries from each age group will be entered in the international Toyota Dream Car contest, whose winners could win an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan.
Hawaii has had a strong showing in past contests, sending Emily Stone of Kaneohe to Japan in 2013, and Teah Laupapa of Kapolei and Emma Thain of Koloa in 2014.
