Hawaii junior Franziska Weidner won all three events she entered and sophomore Metin Aydin won two events in the UH swimming teams’ meet with Minnesota and Drury on Saturday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Weidner won the women’s 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 50.33 seconds, the 100 free (50.94) and 200 individual medley (2:03.32).
UH junior Bryndis Hansen won the 50 free (23.62).
Aydin won the men’s 200 backstroke (1:48.63) and 200 IM (1:49.86) and finished second in the 100 back.
UH sophomore diver Johan Sandell won the men’s platform event in the Wally Nakamoto Hawaii Diving Invitational on Friday. Sandell scored a personal-best 368.95, the fourth-best score in program history.
UH junior Mariah Renteria qualified for the NCAA Zone A meet with a score of 280.05 in the women’s 3-meter event.
Nelson’s game-winner lifts BYUH
Tanner Nelson hit the go-ahead 3-pointer from the right wing with 13 seconds remaining as the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s basketball team beat Azusa Pacific 80-79 on Saturday at Cannon Activities Center.
Shad Watson led the Seasiders (8-9, 3-4 PacWest) with 26 points, including 7-for-13 from 3-point range, and Nelson added 23 points.
Caeleb Roney had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Bailey Kikuchi contributed nine assists for BYU-Hawaii.
Joey Schreiber finished with 27 points for the Cougars (4-10, 2-6), who scored the game’s first 11 points.
>> In the women’s matchup, Azusa Pacific outlasted BYU-Hawaii 56-47.
The Cougars (7-8, 5-2) outscored the Seasiders (6-7, 3-4) 20-7 in the fourth quarter to gain control of the game.
BYUH’s Safia Sheikh led all scorers with 18 points, while Kristin Baldwin grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Tara Casey led Azusa Pacific with 14 points.
>> In other PacWest women’s action, Hawaii Hilo edged Concordia (Calif.) 76-73 at the Vulcans’ gym.
Four players scored in double digits for the Vulcans (2-8, 2-5), led by Kim Schmelz’s 15 points. UHH also overcame Sopavy Seng’s 32-point outburst that included seven 3-pointers. Annie Studdert added 11 points for the Eagles (6-7, 4-3).
