Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said he’s leaving the fate of Police Chief Louis Kealoha entirely with the Police Commission.
“The Police Commission … is the employing authority,” Caldwell said Wednesday. “They’re the ones who deal with the chief. And it is a personnel/human resources issue and as the employing authority, they need to negotiate the separation of the chief from the Police Department, his retirement. And I have full confidence in their ability to do that.”
The commission announced last week that Kealoha had agreed to retire, after receiving a letter from the FBI informing him that he is a being investigated for alleged criminal conduct.
Caldwell said his only say in the matter is to “appoint strong commissioners.” He added that Loretta Sheehan and Steve Levinson, his latest appointments, “have shaken things up,” and that he expects to make another appointment soon.
Several City Council members on Tuesday voiced frustration with the lack of information they are receiving from the commission and said they believe a settlement involving additional city money should receive their approval. Police Commission Executive Director Max Sword said he could not speak about the negotiations publicly because it is a pending personnel matter.
