Justin Thomas followed his drive off the tenth tee during the first round of the Sony Open golf tournament, today, at Waialae Country Club.

Justin Thomas’ eagle on his finishing hole gave him a course record 11-under 59 and the lead after the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii today at Waialae Country Club.

Thomas, 23, who won the SBS Tournament of Champions on Sunday on Maui, became the youngest golfer in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59.

It broke the tournament one-round record of 60 set by Davis Love III in 1994.

“It was obviously a fun day,” Thomas said. “I just kind of had it rolling out there. I was hitting it well. All my birdies were easy. It wasn’t like I made any long putts or anything.”

Hudson Swafford shot a 8-under 62 to trail Thomas by three shots. Rory Sabbatini opened with a 63. Former University of Hawaii golfer Jared Sawada opened with a 2-under 68 and amateur Brent Grant, who played at Moanalua and BYU-Hawaii, is 1 under. UNLV junior John Oda, also a Moanalua alum competing as an amateur, shot a 70. Parker McLachlin and Kevin Hayashi were 1 over and Tadd Fujikawa is 3 over.

Thomas made two eagles, one bogey and eight birdies, including five in a row during one stretch.

He began the day on the back nine and chipped in for eagle from 34 yards out on the par-4 10th.

He made birdies on Nos. 16, 17 and 18 to shoot 29 before the turn, and then birdied three of the next four holes to get to 9 under with five to play.

He made four straight pars, avoiding a bogey on No. 8 with a 10-foot putt for par, and then sunk a 15-foot eagle putt on No. 9 after hitting his second shot out of the fairway bunker.

Thomas played in the same group as World No. 5 Jordan Spieth and Daniel Berger, who both shot 65.

“The coolest part for me was how excited they were for me on 18,” Thomas said. “To do that with two of your best friends out here … that you played with for so long.”
