The National Weather Service today issued a high surf advisory for the north and west facing shores of Oahu, Niihau and Molokai and the north facing shores of Maui until 6 a.m. tomorrow. A previously issued high surf warning was canceled.

The high surf will continue to lower throughout the weekend and drop below advisory levels by tomorrow morning, but will remain at moderate levels, officials said.

Surf is expected to be between 14 and 18 feet along the north and west facing shores of Niihau and Kauai and along the north facing shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui, 10 to 15 feet along west facing shores of Oahu and Molokai, and 6 to 10 feet along west facing shores of the Big Island.

Officials expect high surf impacts with very strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents. Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigation dangerous.

The public is urged to stay well away from the shoreline along the affected coasts and heed all advice given to them by ocean safety officials.
