Long Beach State hands Rainbow Warriors first loss

Freshman opposite Rado Parapunov put down a career-high 23 kills in his first start and freshman hitter Austin Matautia added a career-high, 16 but it was not enough as No. 4 Long Beach State handed No. 5 Hawaii its first loss this men’s volleyball season, defeating the Rainbow Warriors 23-25, 21-25, 23-25, 33-31, 15-10 tonight in Long Beach, Calif.

Freshman middle Patrick Gasman also had a career high with 12 kills and sophomore Larry Tuileta added 12 digs for Hawaii (5-1, 0-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) in its first road trip.

The 49ers (5-1, 2-1 MPSF) were led by sophomore opposite Kyle Ensing’s 24 kills and got 22 from sophomore hitter TJ DeFalco. Senior middle Bryce Yould added 12 kills for The Beach which defeated Hawaii for the third consecutive time. The two teams meet again on Friday at the Walter Pyramid. The series is now tied 41-41.
