Hawaii’s supply of last-minute magic ran dry at a critical time.
The Rainbow Warriors were unable to manufacture late heroics for a third straight game, falling 76-70 to UC Davis on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH (8-10, 2-3 Big West) dropped to 2-1 on its five-game homestand with contests looming against UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara next week.
Second-place Davis (12-8, 4-1) had an answer for every UH bucket down the stretch, repeatedly silencing the crowd of 4,994. Most notably, Darius Graham buried 3s when Noah Allen’s post hook briefly gave UH a 61-59 lead and again when Brocke Stepteau dished to Zigmars Raimo for a layup that made it 63-all with 4:33 remaining.
Allen continued his scoring tear — he poured in 26 points on 7-for-11 shooting — but it wasn’t enough. UH led for the final time, 69-68, on a drive by Stepteau with 2:05 to play. But Davis called timeout and Lawrence White delivered with the go-ahead 3 from the right wing with 1:39 left.
Davis went 5-for-8 at the line from there, enough to put it away as UH had missed 3s by Jack Purchase and Gibson Johnson in the final 1:06.
“We didn’t get stops and we needed that big shot,” Allen said. “It didn’t fall for us tonight.”
Allen had his third straight game of 25 points or more but scored for the last time on a free throw with 15 seconds left. He went 12-for-15 at the line.
It was Davis’ first win at the Sheriff since Jan. 19, 2013, when Corey Hawkins dropped 40. Junior forward Chima Moneke did the bulk of the damage this time, with a career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds. He set a Davis single-season record with his eighth double-double.
The Aggies, who start four seniors, were exultant.
“I let it be known to Coach (Jim Les) and to the players early this week, that I never had a win on the road here,” Graham said. “I was hungry for one, me and the seniors, we were hungry for this win. We really grinded it out.”
Les, who watched UH celebrate the 2016 Big West regular-season championship-clinching win at Davis’ Pavilion last March, tipped his cap to his counterpart Eran Ganot.
“Hawaii did a great job of making runs and getting the crowd involved,” Les said. “Every time we needed a big play, a big shot, a big stop, we came up with it. That’s the sign of a good basketball team. So really proud of them.”
UH led by one at halftime but gave up a 9-2 run coming out of the break.
Graham’s two top-arc 3s within a span of two minutes over UH’s zone defense drew the ire of Ganot.
“I thought we showed some lack of maturity in key points, and lack of discipline,” the Hawaii coach said. “To give up two big 3s at the top of a zone, one time with no one there and once with a soft hand.”
Not helping matters were a spate of missed layup attempts around the rim.
“It’s a recurring theme, and we had probably more than we had before,” Ganot said. “(But) those shots didn’t take us out of our rhythm. We continued to execute.”
UH tied its season low with 10 turnovers. But it was also tough to get a rhythm as UH sent UCD to the line repeatedly.
“It felt like every single time we got something going, we would respond with a foul and send them to the line,” said forward Gibson Johnson, who scored 14 points. “I think if we figure out how to guard in that stretch without fouling, then we come up with the win.”
Allen, the reigning Big West player of the week, came in with 55 points over the past two games. The senior picked up right where he left off, with nine points in the first 10 minutes.
Allen drove the lane and went to his left hand to beat the shot clock for a 27-25 UH lead late in the half.
Davis earned four and-1 opportunities in the half, converting three. The last by Brynton Lemar cut UH’s lead to 33-32 going into intermission. Lemar finished with 18 points.
