The University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team returned home with a new record but the same ranking. The Rainbow Warriors (7-2, 1-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), after going 1-2 on their first road trip of the season, remained at No. 5 in Monday’s AVCA Division I-II Top 15.
The teams ahead of Hawaii also stayed put, led by unanimous No. 1 Ohio State (6-0). At No. 2 was UCLA (6-1), followed by BYU (6-1) and Long Beach State (6-1).
The Warriors next host Grand View (3-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. and on Sunday at 5 p.m. The Vikings, ranked No.2 in the NAIA poll, finished second to Missouri Baptist in the national final last April.
Castle, Campbell, Pearl City, Kahuku win
Castle, Campbell, Pearl City and Kahuku won their first-round OIA Boys Division I Soccer Tournament matches Monday.
Michael Bocoro and Zeyz Hughes-Martin scored for Castle in a 2-0 victory over Radford.
Jacob Curran scored two goals and David Tupper, Nainoa Kim-Leong and Kobe Kaslow each scored once in Campbell’s 5-0 triumph over Moanalua.
Daniel Woo, Justice Gomes and Luke Wyman scored in Pearl City’s 3-1 victory over Roosevelt. Chad Morishige scored for the Rough Riders.
Nathen Fuluvaka and Truman Spring each scored two goals in Kahuku’s 4-0 win over Waipahu.
Today’s quarterfinal matchups are Castle vs. Mililani, Campbell vs. Kaiser, Pearl City vs. Kalani and Kahuku vs. Kapolei.
Castro lifts Chaminade women to victory
Destiny Castro had 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Chaminade women’s basketball team defeated Holy Names 71-69 on Monday at McCabe Gym.
Kali Benavente’s free throw with seconds remaining put the Silverswords (3-14, 3-10 PacWest) ahead 71-67 with four seconds left.
Jeana Magana scored 17 points for the Hawks (1-17, 1-11), who outscored the Silverswords 25-14 in the fourth quarter.
Goodwin, Pope carry Silversword men
Rohndell Goodwin scored 29 points and Austin Pope had 26 points and 14 rebounds as the Chaminade men’s basketball team beat Holy Names 92-79 on Monday at McCabe Gym.
The Silverswords improved to 13-7 and 9-4 PacWest.
Jewels Sanders scored 26 points for the Hawks (3-16, 2-10).
HPU’s Mackenzie honored for defense
Hawaii Pacific guard Breanna Mackenzie has been selected the Pacific West Conference Women’s Basketball Defender of the Week.
Mackenzie, a junior from Melbourne, Australia, averaged 8.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.0 assists last week in wins over Hawaii Hilo and Notre Dame de Namur.
