After watching the first month of professional golf tournaments up close and personal, Hawaii can catch Michelle Wie and Tiger Woods on TV this morning.
After that, settle in for 11 months of local golf, highlighted by the LPGA Lotte Championship at Ko Olina in April, the David S. Ishii Foundation state high school championships in May at Kaanapali and the State Stroke and Match Play (Manoa Cup) championships before and after. The year ends at Mauna Lani Resort with the Hawaii State Open.
Parker McLachlin, who opened his Web.com season this week in the Bahamas, is expected to defend his title at the 59th Mid-Pacific Open a week after Lotte. The 67th Jennie K. Wilson Invitational is a month after that in Lanikai.
The University of Hawaii hosts its 41st John A. Burns Intercollegiate next month and 32nd Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in March. The Pacific West Conference Championships are here in April.
But it is Hawaii Hilo that kicks off college golf’s spring season a week from today at Waikoloa Kings’ with its 26th annual Amer Ari Intercollegiate. Six of Golfweek’s top-15 teams and the No. 1 player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking are expected.
“My standard line regarding our team and this tournament every year is good luck, we are going to need it,” says 26-year Vulcans coach Earl Tamiya. “But we are not in this to win it. We enjoy putting on one of the best tournaments in the country. I think this is an event that for those who play in it, they will never forget it. And for the Big Island, it provides an economic impact that is immediate and residual.”
Eighth-ranked Stanford features senior Maverick McNealy, the top-ranked amateur and son of billionaire Scott McNealy, who co-founded Sun Microsystems. Maverick is scheduled to graduate in June in management science and engineering. The 21-year old has talked more about founding a start-up to help others than turning pro. He has won 11 collegiate titles, sharing the school record with Tiger Woods.
Sixth-ranked USC, the tournament’s defending champion, is back with Sean Crocker, Golfweek’s sixth-ranked player. Oklahoma State (No. 5) is the tournament’s top-rated team. Auburn (7), Texas (12) and Texas Tech (15) will also be at Waikoloa along with defending NCAA champion Oregon, the University of Hawaii and Japan’s Osaka Gakuin.
Texas, last year’s NCAA runner-up, features top-five players Doug Ghim and Scottie Scheffler. Punahou alum Kalena Preus, the 2013 Hawaii high school champ, is also on the team.
