The Kona Historical Society received a $28,000 grant from the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority to support an interactive history program at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm in Captain Cook.
The Kona Historical Society, a nonprofit and a Smithsonian Museum affiliate, will use the funds to support the “Hands on History” program, which offers interpretive talks and “living history” demonstrations.
Activities, hosted by staff and volunteers, include roasting coffee using traditional home methods, lauhala weaving, Japanese calligraphy, traditional medicinal gardening, sustainable vegetable gardening, Japanese pickling, mochi making, tofu making, sashiko (Japanese stitching) crafts and Japanese floral arrangements.
The coffee museum is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays at 82-6199 Mamalahoa Highway near mile marker 110.
