A 65-year-old visitor who died after large waves knocked her down at a Maui beach has been identified as Katherine F. Turnbull of Seattle. An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
On Jan. 26, Turnbull was standing in the water near the shore at Poolenalea Beach, also known as Chang’s Beach, when she was “overcome by head-high sized shorebreaks,” according to the Maui Fire Department.
Turnbull was unresponsive as bystanders pulled her out of the water and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until lifeguards arrived and took over.
Shortly after, firefighters and paramedics arrived and continued lifesaving measures. The fire department said she died at the scene.
2 escape from fire at Date Street duplex
Firefighters extinguished a fire at a duplex in the McCully-Moiliili area early Wednesday.
The fire started just after 3 a.m. at 2275 Date St. When firefighters arrived, they observed gray smoke billowing from the rear of the structure, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.
Firefighters brought the fire under control by 3:11 a.m. Two people inside the duplex at the time of the fire were able to escape, Jenkins said.
Wind rekindles smoldering Big Isle wildfire
A rekindled fire that broke out at 6 a.m. Wednesday scorched at least 30 acres in the northernmost area of the Army’s Pohakuloa Training Area on Hawaii island.
Winds reignited a fire that had been burning underground and had gone undetected with smoldering roots and stumps, and had been called extinguished Jan. 26, said Eric Hamilton, PTA public affairs officer. The PTA’s medevac helicopter and the Hawaii County Fire Department’s helicopter made water drops in the Keamuku Maneuver Area.
