Family-style dining at Black Rock Kitchen

Large parties at Black Rock Kitchen in the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa can opt for family-style dining from an ‘Ohana Table menu. Choose a salad, starter, two entrees and two desserts per party, all of which will be served with sharing in mind.

Among options, curated by executive sous-chef Chris Lederer, are starter items such as Waipoli greens, pork belly bao buns and Alaskan crab cakes; entrees of grilled bone-in rib-eye, fresh local fish and jumbo shrimp; a Maui vegetable medley and starches such as garlic fried rice and roast or mashed potatoes. Desserts are the chef’s signature poi beignets and peanut butter paradise pie. Menu upgrades are available and the chef presents the dishes at the table himself.

Of food and football

The second Friday of every month brings a food-truck rally to Kaimuki High School, a benefit for the football program.

February’s Ono Fridays event is 5 to 9 p.m. this week at the school, 2705 Kaimuki Ave.

Among vendors expected: Kuuipo Lunchwagon, Linaka’s Catering, Uncle Lani’s Poi Mochi, Chamorro Grindz, Nosh Hawaii, Bao Tao’n, HI Cravings, Dragon Cones, Ulu’s Lemonade and Olay’s Thai Food Express.

Matcha makes a match

Hawaiian Host Inc. has created a new flavor of macadamia nuts, enrobed in a green coating of white chocolate and matcha.

Matcha Macs, with whole nuts in the center, are available in two-piece bars for a suggested retail price of $1.09, as well as a nine-piece, 3.5-ounce gift box for about $5.39.

Available only in Hawaii, the candies are sold at ABC Stores, Don Quijote, Foodland, Longs, the Navy Exchange, Safeway, Walgreens and Walmart.

To launch the product, the company is giving away a trip for two to Japan, where matcha green tea originated.

Entries will be accepted from Sunday through April 2. Entry guidelines and contest rules can be found on the Hawaiian Host website, hawaiianhost.com.

Pearlridge gains pho stop

After hours of bargain hunting, few things are more restorative than a warm, tasty bowl of pho, and Pearlridge Center patrons can reap those benefits now that Pho Factory has opened at the Downtown Food Court.

The restaurant prepares each dish to order. Those include beef, chicken, wonton, oxtail, tofu and seafood pho selections; barbecue plates; vermicelli dishes; fried rice entrees; and Vietnamese sandwiches. Miniplate specials also are offered daily.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The food court is across from the Pearlridge West Theaters.

Pho Factory has two other locations, at Windward Mall and the Royal Hawaiian Center.
