A 38-year-old man, who pleaded guilty to several charges including first-degree burglary in 2013, had been on supervised release when he was caught Thursday in Waianae and arrested on a bench warrant.
Amery Kahale-Sugimura, also known as Jon Edward Dudoit, appeared Friday in Circuit Court. He is being held on $1.5 million bail for various charges stemming from crimes committed in 2013.
He pleaded guilty to the offenses including first-degree burglary, auto theft, drug charges, firearm violations, terroristic threatening and third-degree assault.
The Prosecutor’s Office will seek to have him held without bail, a spokesman said.
Two homes were evacuated Thursday before more than a dozen Honolulu police officers, including a SWAT team, made the arrest with the help of deputy U.S. marshals, a police spokeswoman said.
On Oct. 29, 2013, Kahale-Sugimura stole a motorcycle, crashed it, fled on foot and burglarized a home in Aiea. He assaulted a 68-year-old man before stealing the man’s pickup truck and hitting two police officers while trying to flee. That’s when police shot him.
After pleading guilty Jan. 11, his public defender asked for him to be released to Habilitat, from which he fled.
A judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest Monday.
Kahale-Sugimura has 22 criminal convictions, the state Judiciary’s online records show.
Coast Guard plucks 6 from grounded boat
The Coast Guard rescued six people Thursday after their 34-foot boat ran aground while entering the channel at Keehi Lagoon.
At about 6:43 p.m. Thursday, the Coast Guard received a mayday call from boaters aboard the grounded vessel, the Malia.
The Coast Guard launched its 45-foot response boat, but it was unable to reach the vessel, which was in shallow water. An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew responded and hoisted the boaters safely to land. No injuries were reported.
The boat’s owner is working with the Coast Guard to salvage the vessel.
