A malfunctioning circuit breaker started a two-alarm house fire in Wailupe on Saturday that caused $270,000 in damage, Honolulu firefighters said.
About 35 firefighters responded to 5044 Kalanianaole Highway at about 10:35 a.m. and found flames coming from the basement of the single-story structure, said Honolulu fire Capt. Kevin Mokulehua.
Firefighters used foam to smother the flames and brought the fire under control at 10:54 a.m. It was extinguished at 12:25 p.m.
No one was home at the time and no one was hurt.
A fire investigator determined the blaze began in a crawl space under the home and was triggered by a malfunctioning circuit breaker in the electrical panel, igniting the structural framing of the home.
Aina Haina blaze chars Coast Guard building
Firefighters took 15 minutes to bring a fire under control Saturday at a single-story housing structure for the Coast Guard in Aina Haina.
The building was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Kevin Mokulehua said.
The Fire Department took three minutes to arrive at the fire that was reported at 10:36 a.m. and used firefighting foam to suppress the flames and protect neighboring structures.
The cause of the fire and its damage were under investigation.
