An endangered Hawaiian owl was euthanized after it was found last month on the North Shore with a broken wing.
The pueo, a 7-year-old female named Sunshine, spent several weeks in Aloha Animal Hospital, then was sent for rehabilitation at the Hawaii Wildlife Center in Kapaau, Hawaii island, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Sunday.
But the bird continued to suffer and so was euthanized over the weekend, the department said.
“After the rehab experts at the wildlife center thoroughly evaluated Sunshine’s broken wing, it was determined the bird could not be released back into the wild and that it would likely require pain medication for the rest of its life,” said Afsheen Siddiqi, a biologist with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife, in a statement.
Pueos are listed by DLNR as endangered on Oahu though not on the neighbor islands.
The department plans to initiate a population study of pueo later this year on Oahu to get a better idea of their numbers, range and available habitat.
